Just this past week, a family on Long Island received word that their loved one’s DNA was identified from the devastation of the Twin Towers. Of course, they had known she was gone, but a tiny bit of closure came to them prior to this 20th anniversary. It showed that the New York community continues to feel this incredible loss two decades later. Nearly 3,000 of our friends and family members did not return home from a normal Tuesday. We remember them today. And we commit to doing all we can to help make this a world where we all come home safely every day to those we love.

Goodbye 2021! It’s been another year with COVID. While the end seems to be in sight, we must still take precautions and get vaccinated. There’s a federal mandate that is being challenged in some courts which says companies with 100 or more employees must make certain that their employees are vaccinated or tested regularly for COVID-19. ... Many business owners have questions about the way in which the requirement will be enforced and what should small businesses do to protect their employees and customers. LOVE LAW FIRM helps New York small business owners with employment questions. Look at our library of materials and contact us with any questions about employment rules and laws. You can also read our article entitled, Key Employment Law Issues Concerning COVID-19 Vaccine Mandates for New York Small Businesses. https://1l.ink/T5487JD

Let it Snow! "Let It Snow" is a song written by the great lyricist Sammy Cahn and composer Jule Styne in July of 1945. Oddly, it was written in Hollywood, California during a heatwave as the two composers dreamed of cooler climates. Long Island, NY where the LOVE LAW FIRM is located, sees nearly 23 inches of the white stuff every year. That’s a bit less than the US average of 28 inches. ... In addition to winterizing your car and home, you need to prepare your business for winter. This means salting the sidewalks if you have customers visiting your store, keeping a snow shovel and jumper cables handy, and making backup plans. Another plan to consider is a business succession or exit plan. Read our articles about when you want to exit your business, engage in succession planning, or otherwise monetize your investment. https://1l.ink/LZPGGFK

What Does Publish or Perish Mean for My New York Business? New York state law requires all LLCs (limited liability corporations) to comply with the publication requirement. New York is one of only three states in the entire country that still mandates that newly-formed companieswhich includes LLCs, PLLCs, LPs and LLPsto publicly announce their establishment in a printed advertisement. This requirement dates back to a bygone era when periodicals were the main way of infor...ming the general public that new corporate entities were opening. Despite this outdated reasoning, this law remains in effect in our state. Read what this requirement means in present-day context by accessing our article entitled, Publish or Perish: Understanding NYS' Publication Requirement. https://1l.ink/KCXCVHQ

It's easy in the midst of this (though we may be but at the beginning) to become overwhelmed and start to give in to fear. But then Winston Churchill reminds us from his speech on October 29, 1941, facing a seemingly overwhelming force: "You cannot tell from appearances how things will go. Sometimes imagination makes things out far worse than they are; yet without imagination not much can be done. Those people who are imaginative see many more dangers than perhaps exist; cert...ainly many more than will happen; but then they must also pray to be given that extra courage to carry this far-reaching imagination. "But for everyone, surely, what we have gone through in this period ... this is the lesson: never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never-in nothing, great or small, large or petty - never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense." And in the midst of the daily news cycle of gloom, let us celebrate and recognize all of the good things people - first responders, health care workers, teachers, business owners - are doing for each other. There are so many. They are all around us. We need only look. When we look back at this time - and there will be a day (hopefully soon!) from which we can look back at this - let us be able to remember that this was the time we were who we wanted to be. We were who our families needed, our friends needed, our businesses needed, our clients needed, and we, ourselves, needed. If you have an inspirational story you want to share about yourself or others, please feel free to share it below.

"Laissez les bon temps rouler!" as many are saying in New Orlean's French Quarter today. I have loved New Orleans from the first moment I was able to visit it. The culture, architecture, people, food and especially the music everywhere make me happy. It is one of my three favorite cities in the US. To celebrate Mardi Gras, I want to introduce an inspiring entrepreneur from there - Dr. Lana Joseph, owner of multiple businesses all relating to her passion - audiology. She had a... speech impediment as a child and was bullied for years. Once she entered into speech therapy, within three months she made remarkable progress. But that experience stayed with her. She took that pain and made it into a career - ensuring others don't suffer due to hearing loss, speech problems or deficits. She opened her first business on Martin Luther King's Day 2016 as her practice is community-based, and opened her second location two years later on the holiday. She runs a consulting firm and a charity investing in the surrounding areas. Entrepreneurs use their own life experiences to create businesses that meet real needs. Dr. Joseph is leading the way and helping people hear the music in the city I love. To learn more about her: https://1l.ink/XQ38FK4 If you're a New York entrepreneur and have a dream you want to make a reality, LOVE LAW FIRM would love to be a part of your success story! Happy Presidents' Day! I hope this email finds you enjoying a day off, re-energizing yourself after a fast start to 2020! It's been a great year so far for our family, and I hope the same for you and yours. And, even if it hasn't been, I would like to remind you that, according to biographer Joseph J. Ellis, our Founding Father, George Washington, lost more battles in his military career than he won. But he had a keen strategic mind, he inspired the loyalty of his troops, and... he was fearless. He had a vision of what was true and right, and he would do anything needed to achieve it. Accordingly, he served as president of the Continental Congress and was the first to sign the new Constitution. (He couldn't sign the Declaration of Independence as he was leading troops in battle at the time.) He is the only president in history to be elected unanimously by the Electoral College - twice. And he was posthumously awarded the title General of the Armies of the United States - so that no one will ever outrank him. You don't have to win everything. You just have to win the right ones. Here's the winning all the right ones in 2020!

Happy Valentine's Day! The modern Valentine's Day market is a $20 billion enterprise, with more than 145 million cards exchanged. Our household is personally responsible for 50 of them today. The inventor of this industry was a 20-year old entrepreneur, a Mount Holyoke graduate, Esther Howland. She saw the elaborate Valentines created in Europe (her father owned a store that imported them) and she began making her own, more accessibly priced versions.... Like any good entrepreneur, she made samples. She sent them out with her brothers (who were salemen) and they came back with orders for over $5,000 worth of the cards - a huge sum at the time. To meet demand, she created an all-female assembly line, working in her home. Sitting under a huge skylight, the women assembled the Valentines cards for Esther's inspection and approval. She ultimately created a work-from-home model where her assemblers could put together cards, which she would collect, inspect and then distribute. She understood about branding. She put a round "H" in red on the back of her cards, to distinguish them, and later incorporated (because she's a smart entrepreneur) and stamped the initials of her business on the back, "NEV Co." (New England Valentine Company). She improved upon the product and is known for inventing enhancements to Valentines that are still in use today - cards that open to reveal greetings, glitter that spills out, secret compartments for messages, and more. Knowing that one size doesn't always fit all, she published a book of 137 alternate greetings that a person could order, cut out the one they liked best, and paste it over the greeting already in the card. Her business ultimately had revenues of over $100,000 per year - which in mid-1800s was a considerable fortune for a single woman. Entrepreneurs have always been the ones creating industries. Small business is where it is at! LOVE LAW FIRM loves small business owners and entrepreneurs! Happy Valentine's Day to All!
