What are you doing on the new year’s eve? Some things do not change at Ludus

Ludus Fencing Studio 30.12.2020

Dear LUDUS community! The long and exhausting year is almost over! I wish all of you a Happy New Year! I am really grateful to you. Your financial commitment kept the lights at Ludus on. More importantly to me on a personal level, you willingness to take a certain risk, and come to fencing gave me a sense of purpose and mental sanity through all this time. I repeatedly stated that, with all the measures we are taking it is safer at Ludus than at any grocery store. You agree.... Well, it’s great to know that the value of fencing is on par with the value of food to you! The Covid-19 numbers in our region can possibly get worse in the following few weeks. Another complete lockdown cannot be ruled out. Let us hope the vaccines will have their impact to change the situation soon enough. My bet is we will not see any national events this season. It is hard to to imagine how they could be conducted safely and equitably before the vaccinations reach a critical level all over the country. We will keep on fencing because we want to be ready when the competitions return, and just because we enjoy it so much! Once again I wish a happy and safe new year to you and your families! Fence on! Introductory one-on-one lessons at Ludus. No body contact (corps-a-corps) is a rule in our sport. Fencers use weapons with the blades about 3 feet long. That’s... at least 6 feet between them most of the time! Even though the situations of closer proximity happen constantly, the protective equipment we use provides additional safety from the possibility of infection. I invite everyone to consider fencing as a sport of choice in this new reality. See more

First a disclaimer: These shoes were sent to me for free by Ray Lei from ROPHOO Sports Co., Ltd, which manufactures them. I tried them on tonight during the ...practice. They look very much like the popular Adidas D’Artagnan IV. Very light weight, though just a bit heavier than the Adidas. The built looks very solid. The included insoles are quite comfortable with a little squishy feel. The sole is similar to D’Artagnan’s. A little wider, so it may add stability. I was using them on a hardwood floor, and I liked them. I forgot that I was wearing new shoes in a few minutes. I wish I had a chance to try them on an aluminum strip. My guess is they would behave similar to D’Artagnan. I plan to post about their durability later. According to Ray their price is 30-50% lower than Adidas’s. Interested? Get in touch with Ray for a wholesale price, or you can buy them on Amazon. See more

As clubs around the nation reopen, USA Fencing is committed to implementing an events schedule for the 2020-21 season that allows for the return to competition ...in four phases, focusing first on local events and progressing to regional and national events as it becomes safe to do so. Full details: https://www.usafencing.org/news_article/show/1120308 All events will be compliant with local, state and federal guidelines regarding restrictions on the size of gatherings, allowance for sports events, etc. As the situation with COVID-19 continues to evolve throughout the United States and around the world, these phases and timelines may be subject to change.

Hi All! There were several updates on the virus transmission recently, and several national and foreign fencing community publications on the effectiveness of different kinds of facial protection. In order to be on the safest possible side, I decided to update our protocol. The paper/plastic shield inside the fencing mask is not to be used as the only protection any more. If you have installed it, you can keep it, or remove it - your choice. The mask is to be used all the tim...e while you are in the studio. The experience of the last days proves the paper based masks become practically impenetrable to the air when they are wet with sweat. Textile masks are better in that respect, though they also become harder to breath through when wet. My suggested solution is to have two or three reusable textile masks with you, so you could switch to a fresh one when needed. I will set up a drying station (line) next to the front door, where you could put your wet mask for drying. Make sure that your mask can be distinguished from others - it’s kinda important not mix them! See more
