For NY Residents Only! Dr. Saravanan Thangamani, MSc, PhD has announced a research project Citizen Science Tick testing at the Thangamani Lab at the SUNY Cent...er for Environmental Health and Medicine, located at SUNY Upstate Medical University, Syracuse, NY. The purpose of the project is to identify ticks by species before testing for a variety of pathogens. Lab Disclaimer: The tick testing is meant only for academic / research purposes and should not be considered as a diagnostic tool or as a basis on which to make health care decisions. The LDA does not recommend for or against anyone sending in ticks and has no responsibility for results or how data is used or stored. The information herewith is shared by the LDA as a courtesy. The study is to be conducted for research purposes only, and its outcome is the responsibility and property of Thangamani Lab. Saravanan Thangamani is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) at Galveston. Dr. Thangamani’s research focuses on understanding the role of tick feeding and tick salivary factors in the establishment of Powassan virus. His long-term goal is to develop novel strategies to control tick-borne virus transmission. To this end, he is employing cutting edge techniques to unravel the functional role of salivary factors (proteins and microRNAs) in facilitating Powassan virus transmission. Understanding the function(s) of these molecules, and how it interacts with the host immune system is vital to development of novel disease transmission control strategies. Recently, Dr. Thangamani has initiated research to understand the effect of Powassan virus co-infection on Lyme disease transmission. https://www.newyorkupstate.com//upstate-lab-tests-ticks-fo

It was a pleasure to meet with a former brother in blue, Bob Sabatino, who is the Executive Director of Lyme Society Inc. Bob has spent the last several years t...raveling the state to educate others about Lyme Disease and frequently advocates for more funding from all levels of government to test and treat tick-borne diseases, including Lyme. He is also part of a federal #TBDWorkingGroup that has really shaped the medical community’s response to Lyme Disease in recent years. This session I was proud to support several pieces of legislation that would have increased funding to support testing, treatment, awareness, and even prevention of Lyme Disease and other tick-borne diseases.
