AdaptAbility is a nonprofit organization created in 2017 for the purpose of helping families with children with special needs to increase mobility, exercise, and to enjoy the pleasure of riding a bicycle while all the members of the family are together. They design custom adaptive bicycles to children with special needs. Each bicycle is tailored to the child's challenges and goals. Adapt Ability bicycles are donated to families free of charge, allowing children with special n...eeds to have access to the joy of bike riding no matter their income level. After the COVID-19 pandemic created economic uncertainty with their grants and funding sources, AdaptAbility showed a tremendous resilience and pivoted their program to create a prototype for an adapter that will convert any bicycle into an adaptive bicycle, called WE ADAPT. They now have a patent pending, and the adapter will be available as of next month! Every WE ADAPT is customized to specific needs of children with special needs, and is manufactured in Brooklyn, mostly by hand, using parts made in the USA. Learn more at Adapt Ability and follow them to learn more about the WE ADAPT adapter being released soon! #nationalbikemonth #bikemonth #madeinbrooklyn #madeinnyc

The Better Pop is a uniquely shaped kombucha popsicle founded by Ruby Schechter, a designer and entrepreneur in Manhattan. Her mission is to show people that healthy food can also taste amazing. Through innovation, design, and taste, The Better Pop is making it easier for people to make better food choices, one popsicle at a time. The idea was inspired by Ruby's mom, who has issues with her digestive health. After numerous doctor appointments, her mother became tired of bein...g continually told to take probiotic pills. Ruby began to wonder if there was a more enjoyable way to consume probiotics. Knowing that kombucha is packed with probiotics, she encouraged her mom to try it, but she was uncomfortable with the idea of drinking fermented tea. Fortunately, her mom loves popsicles, so she decided to mix fruit and kombucha into a probiotic frozen treat. She loved it. It was a tasty treat that also provided her mom with the probiotics that she needed. The patented hexagonal shape was inspired by Ruby’s mother’s sensitive teeth, so she wanted to design a shape that would change her popsicle eating experience. The unique hexagonal shape allows consumers to bite and break off pieces with ease, changing the way people interact with their popsicles. The Better Pop helps fight food waste by using whole fruit instead of just fruit juice, also adding extra fiber. There is no added sugar, dyes, or artificial colors - just naturally fermented fruit, transformed into healthy and delicious kombucha popsicles! Learn more at The Better Pop. Madison + Green is a Manhattan-based maker of traditional Thai inhalers. Founded by a mother-daughter duo, Mia and Jasmine, in February 2020, Madison + Green brings together traditional Chinese medicine with medicinal French aromatherapy to offer a range of remedies with stimulating yet calming effects. Mia and Jasmine have carefully designed their inhalers for specific purposes to help their customers get inspired, create, rest, meditate, relieve stress, concentrate, and ref...resh. They even have a short quiz on their website to help you select a recommended collection of inhalers to suit your specific needs. Madison + Green was originally created after Jasmine had returned from her honeymoon in Thailand, and brought her mother traditional Thai inhalers as souvenirs. Both Mia and Jasmine immediately fell in love with the stimulating yet soothing traditional remedies, especially when feeling overwhelmed or stressed. They kept the inhalers on their office desks, and every time they felt irritated or overwhelmed at work, they took a deep breath and calmed their minds. Mia, a longtime exponent of aromatherapy, and Jasmine, a certified clinical aromatherapist, decided to bring together traditional Thai inhalers and Western aromatherapy. The resulting range of remedies was a stimulating yet calming collection of inhalers that mother and daughter carefully designed for specific purposes. Auria Abraham started Auria's Malaysian Kitchen in 2013 with one product, Sambal, a spicy chilli paste ubiquitous in Southeast Asia. In the years since, Auria has earned the nickname of the Sambal Lady for both her award-winning product, as well as the many recipes and demos she has created to champion Sambal throughout NYC. Her range of products have since grown to include a Lime Leaf Sambal, as well as two flavors of Kaya, a rich coconut jam mainly used on toast, that fea...ture salted caramel and pandan respectively. Auria was born and raised in a tiny town called Seremban in Malaysia. She grew up surrounded by the delicious cuisine of her homeland and soaked up the diverse culinary culture that reflected the multi-ethnic makeup of the people. In her mother's kitchen, she learned how to cook the sumptuous curries, delectable noodle dishes, and various exquisite meat and seafood preparations with Malay, Chinese and Indian influences. Over time, she mastered the use of the plethora of Southeast Asian spices and herbs - fenugreek and brown mustard in seafood and vegetable dishes; cinnamon, cardamom and cloves in meat dishes; galangal, fennel and fresh turmeric to flavor sauces and marinades. She came to the US in the early 90s to continue her music studies at Berklee College of Music. While living in the college dorms, she would regularly cook Malaysian meals for her friends who had grown tired of the same old, same old at the college cafeteria. She quickly learned to tone down the heat in her cooking when her friends' faces turned bright red and large pitchers of water were needed to put out the fire! In 2011, Auria created an underground supper club series. She hosted up to 20 people at a time in her home, where she cooked all her favorite dishes. Word quickly spread about Auria’s supper club, and she quickly realized she would need a more public venue to reach a wider audience. Auria began to sell Malaysian food at pop-up markets, food festivals, and street fairs throughout the city, and the buzz was palpable. At the Malaysian Winter Market in Bryant Park in February 2012, Auria’s booth had a line out the park, with customers waiting up to 45 minutes to enjoy her food. She channeled this energy into the creation of Auria’s Malaysian Kitchen, championing two of Southeast Asia’s favorite condiments, and winner of the Specialty Food Association’s sofi Awards. In celebration of national #bikemonth, we are spotlighting Made in NYC member Worksman Cycles. Founded in Lower Manhattan in 1898 by Morris Worksman, Worksman Cycles is now the oldest bicycle manufacturer in the United States. Morris had a vision that bicycles could be used for more than recreation and set out to make bicycles and tricycles suited for commercial applications. Back then, his competition was the Horse and Buggy. He developed delivery cycles that became incredib...ly popular in NYC, used by local businesses to perform delivery of anything from food to laundry. For 120 years, Worksman made its cycles solely in NYC, with factories that at one point were in Manhattan, Brooklyn and eventually Ozone Park, Queens. Today, Worksman Cycles continues to manufacture their delivery cycles, work trikes, food carts, and more in Queens. Last month Worksman was featured in an advertisement with Chase. This panel will highlight the manufacturers who rapidly mobilized to be a part of the solution, whether through new business models, production of masks, face shields, and hospital gowns, or food donations. We will amplify stories that demonstrate the critical role of manufacturing in New York City’s local economy.
