What does religious freedom mean in the public sphere? The French concept of laïcité, the result of a long historical struggle of the Republic against the power of the Church, has no equivalent in the US. Many Americans even consider it liberticidal for its apparent limitations on religious practice and observance. Are these concerns valid or a misconstruction? Is there still support for free speech when it comes to religion?

Auteur de plusieurs romans parus aux éditions Gallimard (La meilleure part des hommes, 2008; Mémoires de la Jungle, 2010; Faber, 2013, 7, 2015, Âmes, 2019), il poursuit sa recherche en métaphysique (Forme et objet, PUF, 2011), tout en publiant des essais portant aussi bien sur l'influence de l'électricité sur notre conception de la vie (La vie intense, 2012), que la politique des identités (Nous, Grasset, 2016), l'éthique animale (Nous, animaux et humains, F. Bourin, 2012) ou les séries télévisées (Six Feet under. Nos vies sans destin, PUF, 2012)

Chantal Thomas est romancière, scénariste et essayiste. Les Adieux à la reine fut son premier grand succès pour lequel elle obtint le prix Femina en 2002. Elle est une spécialiste du XVIIIe siècle, notamment de Sade et Casanova. Elle vient d’être élue à l’Académie française. Elle parlera de ses trois derniers livres : East Village Blues (Seuil 2019), Café Vivre (Seuil 2020) et De Sable et de neige (Mercure de France 2021).

More Here: https://as.nyu.edu/maisonfra//events/pierre-vesperini.html Born in 1978, Pierre Vesperini is a Researcher at the CNRS (National Centre for Scientific Research) with a HDR (Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches = Accreditation to Supervise Research).... An alumnus of the École normale supérieure de la rue d’Ulm (1999-2004) and the École française de Rome (2009-2013), he authored four books: La philosophia et ses pratiques d’Ennius à Cicéron (2012) ; Droiture et mélancolie. Sur les écrits de Marc Aurèle (2016) ; Lucrèce. Archéologie d’un classique européen (2017) ; La Philosophie antique. Essai d’histoire (2020). He is currently working at a book on Western rationality as well as an annotated translation of a selection of Theocritus’ Idyls.

The Goncourt prize has been awarded to Herve Le Tellier for his novel "L'Anomalie". In literary circles, the is the French equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize, in other words the highest honour for writers.
