Today we have MAPA student Laura Klingman and her presentation on public archaeological education! This week we kick things off with MAPA student Kate Simpson and her research on the use of Seneca Red Sandstone for grave markers in Montgomery County, Maryland! Kate examined the stone typology of grave markers across 16 cemeteries in the county to find possible patterns related to class, race, and/or religion. She also used to ARCGIS to look at the distance and relation of the grave markers from the Seneca Red Sandstone Quarry. Great work Kate and we look forward to hearing about your future work! #SenecaRedSandstone #Gravemarkers #gis #PubArch #MAPA #thesis
Today we have our next MAPA student Samantha Russello! Sam did her thesis research on Haudenosaunee wampum. She examined both the trade and use of wampum as a memory aid during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Sam used least-cost-path analyses in ARCGIS to identify the possible trade routes that would bring wampum to each of the Tribes as well as the importance of the wampum belts produced to the Haudenosaunee people. Good work Sam and we look forward to your future research! #wampumresearch #Haudenosaunee #socialmemory #leastcostpath #gis #PubArch #MAPA #thesis
Today we have #MAPA student Theresa Imbriolo and her presentation on factors impacting settlement patterning during the Late Woodland period in the Upper Susquehanna Sub-basin of NY. Theresa examined a variety of factors such as slope, accessibility, defensibility, soil type, and proximity to potable water. Great work Theresa, we can't wait to see what you do next! #settlementpatterns #latewoodland #ancientindigenouslifeways #GIS #MAPA #PubArch #thesis
On the docket today we have Phillip Shnaider and his presentation on the presence of communities of practice reflected in the lithic assemblage from the Castle Gardens Site in the Southern Tier. Using attribute analysis and Chaine Operatoire, Phil examined the reduction sequence and location of both Lamoka and Vestal Points at the site to see if there was enough variation to tell us who produced each point type. Good work Phil and good luck in your future endeavors! #lithics #communitiesofpractice #chaineoperatoire #PubArch #MAPA #thesis
