We would like to share with you that we have chosen the Samantha Peters Memorial Scholarship Fund as the recipient of our 2021 dress down money. Today we wore shirts in memory of Sam who tragically passed away in 2019. Sam was a wonderful friend, an incredible athlete and a respected attorney in steuben county. The scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior at Canisteo-Greenwood Central School. Sam is deeply missed and we feel honored to contribute to her memory in this way.

Today our friend Jim is celebrating his 30th birthday in heaven. We are happy to share that over 50 people joined us in the virtual 5k held in his honor and we were able to donate over $700 to Cancer Services of Steuben, Allegany, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua Counties as a result of your generosity and participation. Thank you for joining us in remembering Jim. We continue to be grateful to serve such amazing communities.

Today we wear YELLOW for Spina Bifida Awareness Month! Spina Bifida is the most common neural tube defect in the United States. It affects 1500 to 2000 babies born each year. There are an estimated 166,000 people with spina bifida living in the US. The Spina Bifida Organization recognizes October as A time to celebrate the hundreds of thousands of people living with Spina Bifida. Every October, we share community stories that challenge us to raise more awareness and sup...port around those living with Spina Bifida. As a community, we can do this by raising awareness about Spina Bifida either in our own circles or to the larger networks of which we are apart. It’s also a great time for us to challenge ourselves to find new ways to get involved in raising awareness and advocacy activities. Check out their website for more information https://www.spinabifidaassociation.org/ See more

Today we wear PURPLE for Domestic Violence Awareness Month! Here is some information on Domestic Violence in the United States. For many, home is a place of love, warmth, and comfort. It’s somewhere that you know you will be surrounded by care and support, and a nice little break from the busyness of the real world. But for millions of others, home is anything but a sanctuary. The U.S. Department of Justice estimates that 1.3 million women and 835,000 men are victims of ph...ysical violence by a partner every year. Every 9 seconds, a woman in the U.S. is beaten or assaulted by a current or ex-significant other. 1 in 4 men are victims of some form of physical violence by an intimate partner. Here’s another shocking statistic: the number of U.S. troops killed in Afghanistan and Iraq between 2001 and 2012 is 6,488. The number of women who were murdered by current or ex-male partners during that same time frame is 11,766, according to the Huffington Post. That’s almost double the number of people who were killed fighting in the war. At MCPT we are giving away purple ribbons to increase awareness of domestic violence. We have also asked everyone to share why I wear purple and posted these thoughts in our clinics. The Domestic Violence 24 Hour Crisis Hotline is: 1-800-286-3407 and here is a link for domestic violence assistance in our area: http://www.arbordevelopment.org/domestic See more
