@DesignVSBuild profiled TheatreSquared, Marvel’s world class theatre in Fayetteville, Arkansas in their third episode of a new video series. They explored the differences in how the Architect/Designer and the Builder see a project as it moves from an idea to the construction phase and then a finished structure. Each episode features a different residential or commercial project with interviews from architects, designers, project managers, and more as they walk you through th...e project from their point of view. Ben Roberts, Host and Producer, discusses the design process in this episode of Design vs. Build. #TheatreSquared: Tucked away in the rolling hills of Northwest Arkansas is a world-class theatre dedicated to creating in-house productions for an intimate and inclusive environment. When it came time to expand, they landed a once-in-a-lifetime grant from the Walton Family Foundation, giving them the opportunity to work with world-renowned architects and theatre designers to create the perfect space. #fayettevillear #theatresquared #theatredesign #architecture #publicspace #design #ozarks

A week ago Marvel was invited by NY Magazine’s @Curbed to develop and illustrate ideas for memorials that commemorate the one year anniversary of the NYC COVID pause. The idea was to pair a design firm with a New Yorker to bring to life their vision or memories of this past year. Marvel was paired up with Maria Antonia Toñita Cay, the owner of Williamsburg’s famous Caribbean Social Club. Inspired by Toñita, Marvel designed a commemorative Container of Joy and the Caribb...ean Social Block as a COVID-19 memorial. The Social Block pedestrianizes a block of Grand Street with permanent streeteries on portions of the sidewalk that are bumped out into former parking spaces, claiming auto space for pedestrian activity. The concept illustrates the celebratory atmosphere of Toñita’s outside and honors the social club inside. [The club] is about the sense of community that she creates within that space, says Yadiel Rivera-Díaz, a partner and landscape architect at Marvel. It feels like being in the living room or dining room of one of your tias back in Puerto Rico. It’s just very welcoming. We can’t wait for the return of Toñita’s muchachitos and to extend to the block the feeling of pure joy that comes from sharing a space with friends and neighbors. #toñitas #caribbeansocialclub #williamsburg #nymag #curbed #postcovidarchitecture #publicspace #urbandesign #puertorico #streetfurniture @nymag @curbedny

The show must go on! Back in the summer of 2020, Marvel designed a quick-deployment street theater, called "Broadway Outdoors," made of shipping containers and elevated from the street to let traffic pass underneath; a solution that looked to revive the city with outdoor cultural opportunities neighborhood by neighborhood. Today, we are teaming up with the Van Allen Institute and the Urban Design Forum as part of their Neighborhoods Now series, and paired up with small neigh...borhood arts organizations to create temporary outdoor venues and figure out how to attract audiences big enough to provide a communal experience yet small enough to be safe. (Image ID: Marvel’s design for a reimagined 45th Street pop-up theater in Times Square, an elevated shipping-container based stage with street-level room for the orchestra underneath the elevated stage with rows of audience seating facing the orchestra. The whole setup is nestled between two blocks of temporarily shuttered theaters.) #broadwayoutdoors #newyorktheater #outdoortheater #broadway #marvel #urbandesign #publicspace

Last week’s site visit to El Portal revealed exciting progress. The El Portal Visitor’s Center is an entryway into the El Yunque National Forest that is not only a threshold to be crossed but a place to linger and even return to. EL Portal is an iconic building in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico that will focus on educational and interactive materials about the rainforest and the region at large. The facility includes a renovated theater, two levels of interactive educational materia...ls, visitor resources and community spaces. Marvel is working on this design-build revitalization project with the USDA Forest Service, and Interlink Construction, a local Puerto Rican construction management and development firm, to revitalize and bring back to life both the building and surrounding site of this important cultural anchor on the island. City Life After Corona: Mobility Movement of people was abruptly halted due to the pandemic, especially in bustling cities like NYC where the subway and buses are essential modes of transportation. As we enter the fall, how can we plan future investments and envision alternative patterns of mobility within our city? "Expanding the network of public spaces the city has to offer, safely linking parks and neighborhoods for pedestrians will improve the city’s health and... its people’s health. It’s time we reassert walking as a serious and important mode of mobility that deserves smarter and more widespread planning." Jonathan J. Marvel and Yadiel Rivera-Díaz talked about seeing this moment as an opportunity to permanently reclaim more street space for pedestrians. In 2018-2019, the @urbandesignforum Forefront Fellows investigated the homelessness crisis in New York City. Fellows partnered with the Department of Homeless Services and AIA-NY @centerforarch to visit shelters, interview stakeholders, and draft design recommendations to improve existing shelters across New York City. The Fellows also developed independent projects exploring the root causes of homelessness and housing precarity in New York City. Marvel Architects’ Senio...r Urban Designer, Ishita Gaur, and team members, Melissa Minnich and Heli Pinillos, developed the Breaking Free: Preventing the Prison-to-Shelter Pipeline proposal that investigates the connection between incarceration and homelessness and advocates for improved re-entry services. To accompany this proposal, Fellows also shared interviews with Jonathan Marvel, Founding Principal of Marvel Architects, Judy Whiting, General Counsel for the Community Service Society (CSS), and Rita Zimmer, Executive Director of HousingPlus. Model of El Caño Martin Peña & the G-8, San Juan, Puerto Rico. Marvel Marchand Architects was hired to plan, design and program multiple vacant lots adjacent to the "Zona Marítimo Terrestre" (land maritime zone) scattered throughout the 8 communities in San Juan, PR. The goal of the project is to engage in conversation with... the adjacent communities, gather ideas and collaborate with them on two temporary interventions. These are set to become an integral part of daily life, spaces of representation and nodes for learning. Just like restaurants have expanded into streets across the country, come fall, closing off the streets in front of schools may be a key factor in reopening children’s education. this ability to increase capacity with a flexible, modular space would satisfy common-sense social distancing practices that would be impossible to enact within the current classroom configuration found at most schools. And, most important, it comes at no cost to the city. Thank you @fastcompany for ...getting our message across.
