To Gather Madison Co.’s History Oneida Semi-Weekly Democratic Union published in Oneida, NY Saturday, April 23, 1898. page 2. In accordance with a call issued by Dewitt C. Hadcock, of Stockbridge, quite a number of people, interested in the organization of a Madison County Historical Society, met at the Y.M.C.A. rooms Wednesday afternoon to discuss the matter and take proper action. Among those present from out of town were Mr. Hadcock, Supervisor J. E. Quakenbush, and James ...McCarthy, of Stockbridge, Merrit D. Lyon, of Nelson, and Supervisor W.W. Ames, of DeRuyter. It was expected that the meeting would be addressed by Gen. Charles W. Darling of Utica, corresponding secretary of the Oneida County Historical Society. A dispatch received from that gentleman stated that he could not be present that evening, to which time the meeting was adjourned. Quite a number of our leading citizens, naturally interested in the work were present. Mr. Hadcock served as chairman, briefly stating the object of the meeting. Gen. Darling delivered a most instructive address, which was listened to with marked interest. Articles of incorporation were presented and aligned by the following as charter members: Dewitt C. Hadcock, Edwin J. Brown, W. H. Farnham, John H. Stone, Daniel Keating, W. W. Warr, G . L. Menzie, Frances Messinger Cole, Nellie A. Moot, Theodore Coles, Mary Dyer Jackson, Kate A. Brown, Maria C. Treat, Fannie F. Vane, Alice N. Hodges, J. T. Durham, Alice B. Durham, H.H. Douglas, S. A. Maxon. The next meeting was appointed to be held at the same place in this city on the 8th day Wednesday in May at 2 o’clock in the afternoon, at which time officers will be elected and the proper committees appointed. The work is a most worthy one and will continue to grow in interest as time wears on. See more

We had another great Heritage Handicraft Workshop over the weekend. This workshop was led by the talented artist, Pat Kimber. She instructed participants step by step through the process of painting their very own Rufus Porter landscape on a wooden box. Everyone created beautiful landscapes.

The Women's Rights Pioneers Monument was unveiled in Central Park, N.Y. city, on August 26th of this year to mark the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th amendment, when American women won the right to vote. This is the first statue installed there that honors real women in the park's 167 year history. Nationally renowned sculptor, Meredith Bergmann, created the work which depicts three New York State suffragist leaders: Sojourner Truth, Susan B. Anthony, and Elizabeth Cady Stanton.

Mary Rose Durfee was smitten with the Madison County Historical Society's Madison County Hop Fest and the Hop Fest felt likewise with her. With great enthusiasm Mary Rose shared her early memories as a hop picker on her family’s farm. It was our honor to know her and to crown her the First Hop Queen at the Madison County Hop Fest in 2003. Our sincerest condolences to the Larson and Durfee families.

We want to thank everyone who attended the Madison County Historical Society's annual Madison County Craft Festival. This is the Historical Society's only fundraiser that we are holding this year because of COVID-19. We are so grateful for our talented artisans, food truck owners, musicians, wineries, and volunteers for partaking in the show. All their efforts created a fun, enjoyable weekend event for the community. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation with the screening pro...cess at entry. We are also most appreciative of the generous support from the Gorman Foundation. The Craft Festival was a very different show for us this year as we were required to operate it at a 33% capacity which included all artisans, vendors, visitors, volunteers, and staff on the grounds throughout the weekend event. Therefore, it was obvious that we decreased the number of participants in the show and spaced booths, tables, and chairs six feet apart per the social distancing guideline. We had hand sanitizing stations around the grounds and various high contact surfaces were disinfected regularly. The safety and comfort level of everyone in attendance at the Madison County Craft Festival was our primary concern and main directive in the management of the show. We are looking ahead to next year’s show and have applications available. Until then, stay safe and be well!
