March is Autoimmune Disease Awareness Month. An autoimmune disorder occurs when the body's immune system attacks and destroys healthy body tissue by mistake. There are more than 80 types of autoimmune disorders. The blood cells in the body's immune system help protect against harmful substances. Examples include bacteria, viruses, toxins, cancer cells, and blood and tissue from outside the body. These substances contain antigens. The immune system produces antibodies agains...t these antigens that enable it to destroy these harmful substances. When you have an autoimmune disorder, your immune system does not distinguish between healthy tissue and potentially harmful antigens. As a result, the body sets off a reaction that destroys normal tissues. Very often with Autoimmune disease there is a delay in diagnosis. Many times symptoms overlap each other and the specific disease won't declare itself immediately leaving patients struggling to find the best treatment. Patients often have serial bloodwork and imaging exams that can include Xrays, Ultrasounds, Catscans and MRI's. Many of these diseases are life long and although there has been many advances in therapies of recent years most still have no cure. Know the signs, symptoms and your family history if you feel you are at risk. https://www.health.harvard.edu//whats-the-deal-with-autoim See more

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cancer killer. It can affect both men and women and often starts with no symptoms. Screening tests can find precancerous polyps so they can be removed before they turn into colon cancer. If you're 45 or older or have a family history of colon cancer the time is now to address it. There are different types of screening tests available which include colonoscopy and virtual colonoscopy. Talk to your doctor to see which is the best option for you. Remember screening saves lives!

In celebration of International Women’s Daywe recognize and applaud the achievements and perseverance of all women who have paved the way for other women to strive for excellence. Today’s focus for us is on the women who were the pioneers in medicine and radiology paving a road for other females to follow. Out of every 100 radiologists, only about 21 are women, and only 13 out of every 100 radiology leaders are women. As we move forward we continue to strive to break down barriers and narrow the gender gap. We need to continue the drive to advance diversity and address the needs of women and other minorities in radiology. Collectively, we can all work to create an inclusive world for the greater good of all. https://www.aawr.org//Female-Pioneers-in-Medicine-and-Radi

As Breast Cancer Awareness Month comes to a close we want to highlight one of our special employees, our office manager Jessica. Jessica lost her grandmother Bibi in 2014 from Breast Cancer. Her Grandmother was a long standing patient with us at MD Imaging and as with many of our patients left a lasting impression. Bibi was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in 1999 and under went mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation. Although cancer free for 5 years Bibi had an unfortunate re...currence shortly after. She began as our patient at MD Imaging in 2005 where she had been under going routine MRI's and PET scans. Noting new changes in her scans she went on to have a biopsy with us to confirm her recurrence. After a long battle, she lost her fight in 2014. In memory of her grandmother, Jessica comes in every October 1st with pink hair extensions in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. She walks annually in the local Breast Cancer Awareness walks and she continues to give 100% to all our patients not just in October but year round to encourage and support the fight against Breast Cancer. Breast Cancer doesn't just affect the patient. It affects their family, friends, co-workers and so much more. Remember to get your screening mammography and ultrasound. Cancer affects everyone! Cardiac Calcium Score Test is a screening test that assesses the amount of calcified plaque in the coronary arteries which correlates with the severity of coronary atherosclerosis. A score of 0 implies a low likelihood of coronary obstruction, but cannot totally exclude the presence of atherosclerosis. A high score indicates significant plaque and risk for future cardiovascular events. This test may be recommended by a physician for patients with risk factors for CAD (Coronar...y Artery Disease) but no clinical symptoms. The major risk factors for CAD are: High blood cholesterol levels Family history of heart attacks Diabetes High blood pressure Cigarette smoking Overweight or obese Physical inactivity Some insurances may not cover the cost of this screening. MD Imaging offers it to our patients for $99 Know your risk. Healthy Heart, Healthy You! See more
