"Dessalines Ripping the White from the Flag." The painting is by Haitian artist Madsen Mompremier (b.1952). It shows Jean-Jacques Dessalines (center) ripping the white portion of the French flag and Catherine Flon (in the right corner) sewing the red and blue portions together signifying the alliance between the "nouveaux" and "anciens" libres, in what, by 1803, had become a war to completely abolish slavery and gain independence.
