Do you know what heat index is and how it can effect your dog? Some days I look at this face and wonder how I got so lucky to have the best trail buddy in the... world. I love and care for her so much that it truly breaks my heart to think that any of my mistakes could harm her, but we are human and we all make mistakes. I’ve seen many stories about dogs collapsing from heat stroke on the trails over the years, and I’m sure their owners were heartbroken that their mistake caused such a horrific thing to happen. Many new dog owners don’t know the heat index danger for dogs, so I want to help others be aware before they hit the trails on a hot and humid day like today. Heat Index is the temperature the body feels when heat and humidity are combined. An example is when the temperature is 88 degrees and the humidity is 70% a dog feels like it is 100 degrees. Heat stroke can be seen in all breeds of all ages, but may be more likely in long haired and brachycephalic (short nosed) breeds as well as younger and older individuals. You can search for Heat Index Caution For Dogs to find a chart that shows how all temps and humidity percentages add up and become dangerous for pups. I’ll also add a link to an example of a Heat Index Chart and another helpful site about hiking with dogs in the comments of this post. Please consider this when you want to hit a hike on a hot and humid day. I only do very early morning or evening hikes on hot days, and I make sure there is water for Roxy to swim in for this reason. Once heat stroke begins it is very tough to turn it around. I read that there is only a 50% survival rate. (That seems to vary as well, but you get the idea) Please tell your friends that have dogs about this. I was once a new pup momma and I had to learn a lot as well.
