It is truly disappointing to hear that Suffolk County Executive Suffolk County Executive Steven Bellone plans to run away from a real time opportunity to truly represent the growing minority population in Suffolk County. For the last 2 decades the rapid growth of the minority population in Suffolk County shows no signs of slowing down. Yet, minority populations are still underrepresented. One powerful and real time solution to this is redrawing district lines. The purpose of ...redistricting is to draw lines that best represent changes in population following a census and the facts are clear. The minority population in Suffolk County grew from 19.22% in 2010 to 33.9% in 2020. This means that Suffolk County’s minority population percentage grew by 76.4% Because it was minority communities that saw the most population growth (other than the East End), the districtering maps need to change accordingly in order to keep communities whole. The proposed map that @cestevebellone plans to veto effectively creates four Majority-Minority districts and makes all 18 districts compact in their appropriate local communities. This will reunify communities which will ensure better representation for all Suffolk County residents. In the current map, many minority communities are gerrymandered into numerous districts, which historically dilutes the power of their vote and allows elected officials to overlook their concerns. Our map reunifies communities, as it should be. In addition, it is also not appropriate to lump all minority communities into one singular Majority-Minority district, as this also dilutes their vote in a different way, which is why we further feel great about the fact that the proposed map has four Majority-Minority Districts. This is not about politics or anything else, this is about good government. this is a tremendous step in the right direction and helps to ensure that all residents of Suffolk County especially the next generations of minorities have the ability live in a truly equitable region. #minoritymillenials #newmajority

Voting legislation that Democrats and civil rights leaders say is vital to protecting democracy collapsed when two senators refused to join their own party in changing Senate rules to overcome a Republican filibuster after a raw, emotional debate. Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) drew a roomful of senators for his own speech, upstaging the president’s news conference and defending the filibuster. He said changing to a majority-rule Senate would only add to the "dysfunction that is tea...ring this nation apart." Despite a day of piercing debate and speeches that often carried echoes of an earlier era when the Senate filibuster was deployed by opponents of civil rights legislation, Democrats could not persuade holdout senators Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona and Joe Manchin of West Virginia to change the Senate procedures on this one bill and allow a simple majority to advance it. The Democrats’ bill, the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act, would make Election Day a national holiday, ensure access to early voting and mail-in ballots which have become especially popular during the COVID-19 pandemic and enable the Justice Department to intervene in states with a history of voter interference, among other changes. It has passed the House. Next, Schumer put forward a rules change for a "talking filibuster" on this one bill. It would require senators to stand at their desks and exhaust the debate before holding a simple majority vote, rather than the current practice that simply allows senators to privately signal their objections. But that, too, failed because Manchin and Sinema were unwilling to change the Senate rules, a party-line vote by Democrats alone. For full clarity, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky led his party in doing away with the filibuster’s 60-vote threshold for Supreme Court nominees during Donald Trump’s presidency, "warned" against changing the rules again. #minoritymillennials #newmajority #votingrights

Long Island needs to follow this path! @regional_plan The Connecticut House of Representatives just passed a zoning reform bill that legalizes accessory dwelling units (ADUs) statewide, among other provisions. Now, the state Senate and Governor Lamont need to follow suit. Although this reform does not go as far as some would like, it is undeniably a step towards affordability and housing equity in Connecticut. As lawmakers in New York nationwide begin to recognize t...he value of ADUs, Connecticut has an opportunity to lead the way. #housingaffordability #tinyhouses #housing #longisland #minoritymillennials

Via -@newsday The federal government has begun approving coronavirus-relief loans for small businesses in low-income neighborhoods to address past lending disparities, officials said. On Monday, the Small Business Administration started processing applications for first-time borrowers of Paycheck Protection Program loans. The forms are submitted by community financial institutions that lend to small businesses, particularly those owned by minorities and women or are in poor c...ommunities. The eligible institutions are Community Development Financial Institutions, Minority Depository Institutions, Certified Development Companies and Microloan Intermediaries, SBA said on Monday, adding the institutions together represent just 10% of all PPP lenders. Applications from the community financial institutions for second PPP loans will be approved starting on Wednesday. "A few days later, additional lenders will be able to submit first- and second-draw PPP loan applications," SBA said. Congress last month set aside $15 billion in guarantees for PPP loans made by community financial institutions. House and Senate members were responding to complaints that minority- and women-owned businesses and those without a banking relationship had difficulty in securing loans during PPP’s first phase between April 3 and Aug. 8.
