The Social Security Administration has announced several changes for 2021. First, there will be a 1.3% benefit increase (known as a cost-of living adjustment). For those receiving SSD, this will be about a $16 increase and will be payable in January 2021. Second, the substantial gainful activity (SGA) threshold has increased from $1,260 to $1,310/month. This means the law presumes you are not disabled if you can work and earn $1,310 or more gross per month.... Finally, the Trial Work Period (TWP) threshold increased from $910 to $940/month. The TWP incentive allows those that have been disabled for one year or more to test their ability to work. In 2021, when you work and earn at least $940/month, you have used one of the available TWP months. Yesterday, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) celebrated its 30th anniversary. The ADA prohibits discrimination against persons with disabilities in several areas, including employment, transportation, public accommodations, communications, and access to state and local government programs and services. Although the ADA and civil rights groups have done a lot of great work to protect and enforce the rights of individuals with disabilities, there is still a lot to ...be done to change our culture’s perceptions about those who are disabled. Did you know that 1 in 4 American adults (that’s 61 MILLION people) has a disability? Even with the ADA, individuals who are disabled often have a hard time breaking into the workplace. We encourage you to let go of any stereotypes you might believe about those who are disabled.
