Armchair Travel Book Club with Carolyn on ZOOM email [email protected] for Zoom link NOTES ON A FOREIGN COUNTRY: An American Abroad ... in a Post-American World by Suzy Hansen Tues Jan 18 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm In the wake of the September 11 attacks and the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, journalist Suzy Hansen moved to Istanbul in order to try to understand the Muslim world. Over the course of years in Turkey and traveling through Greece, Egypt, Afghanistan, and Iran, she learned a great deal about these countries and their cultures. But the greatest, most unsettling surprise would be what she learned about her own country. Blending memoir, journalism, and history, and deeply attuned to the voices of those she met on her travels, Notes on a Foreign Country is a moving reflection on America’s place in the world in an era of turmoil. "A deeply honest and brave portrait of of an individual sensibility reckoning with her country's violent role in the world." Hisham Matar, The New York Times Book Review Book, ebook & audio CD versions of the novel are available through livebrary.com

Classic Book Club with Carolyn on ZOOM email [email protected] for Zoom link THE LEOPARD ... by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa Thurs January 13 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm One of the most important novels in Italian literature and one of the best historical novels ever written,The Leopard (Il Gattopardo) by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa chronicles the changes that were taking place in Sicily during and after the Risorgimento. As Prince Don Fabrizio observes the erosion of the aristocracy's power, he remains skeptical that this kind of progress will benefit society. What renders the novel so beautiful is Giuseppe di Lampedusa's bittersweet view of love and human frailty. Book, ebook & audio CD versions of the novel are available through livebrary.com as well as DVDs of the award-winning feature film by Visconti.

Thank you Library Clerk, Marie S., for this review of THE EXILES by Christina Baker Kline The Exiles by Christina Baker Kline is about a penal colony during the 19th century known as Van Dieman’s Land (Tasmania, today). During that time in Britain, people who were accused of petty crimes were sent to this penal colony by ship on months-long voyages. This story centers on three characters. Evangeline, who, after her well-educated father died and was left with no income, foun...d work as a governess. Attracted to the family’s son, she became pregnant, falsely accused of stealing a ring and sentenced to the convict ship. Another of the ship’s passengers is Hazel who was charged with the petty crime of stealing a silver spoon. Having knowledge of midwifery and herbs, Hazel assisted passengers with health needs as well as delivering Evangeline’s baby. During the trip the two women bonded and protected each other. Also included in the tale is Mathinna, an eight year old Aboriginal girl, who was taken forcibly from her tribe by the colonial English governor. The governor’s wife considered Mathinna a curiosity to be tamed and civilized, only to abandon her upon returning to England. The little girl ends up in Van Dieman’s Land, alone and afraid. The story describes the cruelty and brutality these characters endured including grueling hours of hard work as servants and laborers. The Exiles is a stirring account of survival under barbaric and inhumane conditions, and poignantly depicts the strength and determination of the human spirit. https://livebrary.overdrive.com/media/5167679 See more

#TBT #ThrowbackThursday By the time you read this, Montauk resident and WW II veteran Pat DeRosa will have been inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame for the year 2021. A saxophonist extraordinaire whose comprehensive talent includes mastery of other musical instruments like the oboe and clarinet, Pat DeRosa embraces music of every style and era. In the 1940s he played swing with the Tommy Tucker Orchestra and other Big Bands. Fast-forward 60 years to NYC’s Bit...ter End, where you’ll find Pat wailing the blues with Billy Joel’s saxophonist Richie Cannata in a duet that ignited intense applause from the audience. Pat was creating great music in Montauk, too, bringing his friends from the world of jazz to play on the East End. When the famous Toots Thielmans performed his legendary harmonica on a stage near Gosman’s, he brought the house down. Pat taught music to high schoolers by day and managed his own group, the Pat DeRosa Orchestra, by night and on weekends. Bringing musical joy to civic organizations, nursing homes, and hotels and restaurants celebrating weddings, etc., Pat also played music in his later years on cruise ships, winning over a brand-new listening audience. It was a wonderful way to travel and see the world with his beloved wife and biggest fan, Constance Dennis. Several years ago the archives at the Montauk Library scanned photographs from Pat’s early years, a few of which appear in frames behind Pat in this week’s TBT photograph. Scenes of soldiers in the Army Air Force band hamming it up or jamming together to make music are filled with nostalgia. Other photos capture the inky, noir beauty of New York City nightclubs where Pat played, the grit and glitter of the Copacabana and the Paramount. Digital shots of Pat playing with Richie Cannata, or accompanying Mike DelGiudice and Big Shot on Just the Way You Are, are equally compelling. In these images Pat DeRosa, already in his 90s, is sitting on stage and swaying with his sax, a singular stream of energy and inspiration. Music continues to be DeRosa’s Fountain of Youth. December 6, 2020 will mark Pat DeRosa’s 99th birthday. Please join the Montauk Library in congratulating this iconic gentleman on an almost-centenarian life well-lived, and on his induction into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame. The induction, which fittingly took place on Veterans Day, November 11, 2020, will be posted online. In the meantime, you can watch Pat play sax with Big Shot while the crowd goes wild by clicking on www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLuiHcpNBDI

Thank you Library Clerk, Rosemary R., for this review of The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides This is a story about a seemingly happy, successful couple Alicia and Gabriel Berenson. She is an artist and he is a photographer. Six years ago Alicia shot her husband five times in the face. Since the murder, she has not spoken another word. Why did she do it? Why can't she speak? Enter Theo Faber a physiotherapist. He is obsessed with helping heal her and finding out why she did it. This is a good story. A well-written psych thriller. Slowly building in intensity. I highly recommend it. https://livebrary.overdrive.com/media/3994836

Thank you Library Clerk, Tina O., for this review of The Law of Similars by Chris Bonjolian This novel centers around a lawyer, a homeopath and the tragic death of one of the homeopath’s patients. People go to these people thinking they have a better chance of healing themselves. The problem here is the lawyer that represents the homeopath has feelings for her and has a hard time defending her, since her patients took her remedies, instead of listening to their own doctor and they passed on. As the case goes to trial, the homeopath disappears and leaves the lawyer (her lover) behind and all her friends never to be heard from again. Very strange story. https://livebrary.overdrive.com/media/34788

#TBT #ThrowbackThursday Pictorial maps enjoyed great popularity from the 1930s to the 1950s, and partnered beautifully with tourism and the travel industry. This gem was designed by Harry A. Chandler, a popular creator of bird’s eye views and pictorial maps whose ads could be found in NYC papers during the early part of the 20th century. This map appeared in an early brochure published by the Montauk Chamber of Commerce. The Montauk Chamber was born in June 1930. From the... July 11, 1930 issue of the East Hampton Star we know that a large dinner dance with 100 East End attendees celebrated the founding of this organization. The front-page headline proclaimed: Montauk Chamber of Commerce holds banquet at Montauk Manor. Perry Duryea, Toastmaster, President of Newly Organized Chamber, says Purpose is to Tell the World about the Charms of Montauk. Will Boost and Back Betterment Movements. Duryea proclaimed the aims of the Chamber as working for the civic betterment of Montauk and to call attention to the attractions of Montauk as a summer resort through all mediums of advertising. In his recently published book on pictorial maps, Picturing America, The Golden Age of Pictorial Maps, author Stephen J. Hornsby explains the success of this particular type of mapmaking: many of its components are firmly grounded in the principles of advertising. American pictorial maps captured the innermost character of a country by highlighting history, landscape, architecture, and human attributes such as attachment, nostalgia, and memory. Pictorial maps enthusiastically sold places, states, regions, industries, transportation, products, and services of all kinds. The finest pictorial maps spun together maps, pictures, and text to create a visual story or representation that instantly summarized a sense of place, delighting the eye and stimulating the viewer’s imagination. Although ignored in most histories of cartography, pictorial maps were arguably the most creative and dynamic part of American cartography in the middle decades of the twentieth century. In 2020 we celebrate 90 years of existence for the Montauk Chamber of Commerce, but the official incorporation of the Montauk Chamber took place 67 years ago this week: on November 6, 1953. Happy Birthday, Montauk Chamber of Commerce!
