Moonstone Farm and Forest 20.02.2021

The first few chicks of 2021 have hatched today here at Moonstone Farm and Forest from our Araucana, Ameraucana, Easter Egger (Ara/Ameraucana crosses), and Olive Egger(Ara/Ameraucana & Maran/Welsummer cross) hens who have been laying throughout this relatively warm winter. These little chicks will be enjoying their fully free range lives in a little over a month and will be producing more blue, olive, lavender, seafoam green, pink, and dark-green eggs by late summer! In 2020... we hatched about 75% of our chickens and turkeys on the farm nearly doubling our flock. This year we will be hatching 100% of the chickens and turkeys from our diverse flock of heirloom, heritage, conventional, and a few unique Adirondack cross breeds from folks who have re-homed their birds here at the farm. #HappyChickens #freerangechickens #smallfarm #humanelyraised #adirondacks #familyfarm

Healthy Fodder for a Regenerative 2021 Every year, like many of us, the free range Moonstone chickens and turkeys have a bit of an adjustment to make as the long Adirondack Mountain winter months set in. During the warmer months they enjoy all the fresh grasses and bugs they can get wandering around the farm scratching, pecking and murmuring (an indication of contentment). ... During the colder months we supplement as much as possible with our farm-grown meal worms and microgreens to keep the birds healthy & happy and their eggs nutritious & delicious with dark yellow yolks. We've recently made the jump into a more efficient fodder production system with wheat grass (utilizing our existing micro-green production system) to help keep the flock healthy, happy and murmuring until the grass is green again. They are certainly enjoying the unseasonably green grazing and we hope you can all see and taste the difference in the eggs!
