My hope for 2021: The recent domestic terrorism on the Capitol is again forcing folks to confront the idea of white privilege. Because of this, more couples who may not agree on politics and racism are having much deeper talks. It’s been wonderful to facilitate hard conversations, because that’s how change begins... Anti-racism work needs to start as a personal journey for every single one of us but what really gets that journey started can be a comment from or a conversation with someone whose opinion you trust and value. All Lives Matter. Is NEVER an argument to make to a Black Health professional. We have sacrificed countless hours, we have gotten into significant debt, we have... been in school for years upon years, all to continually be questioned whether or not we even belong in these spaces. Most of us decided at young ages that all lives would always matter to us. We decided to enter a profession and field that was dedicated to the service of others, that was dedicated to saving the lives of all those who we came in to contact with, even the ones who refused to be treated by us because of the color of our skin. We decided that even when med schools, nursing schools, PA schools, etc did not think they we had what took to succeed in the fields, we would prove them wrong and do it anyways. We decided that when only 5% of the physicians in America look like us, we would still press forward to increase our representation. We decided that when every single time we enter a patient's room and they thought we were everything BUT their physician or provider, we would still treat them with the utmost respect and continue to provide them with the best care. We decided that when hospital systems and the health system as a whole, would continue to fail to acknowledge the institutionalized racism that is prevalent from undergrad through attendingship, we would still show up every day and save the lives that we swore to heal. So please save us your "All lives matter" argument. We have dedicated our entire lives to you, your parents, your grandparents, your kids, and everyone else you know. We have battled every obstacle from standardized tests (that have been proven to place minorities at a disadvantage) to standing on the front lines of COVID-19. So yes, all lives do matter, BUT all we ask is that as we work to save your life, you work to save ours and finally say that "Black Lives Matter", too.
