While this article is perhaps a bit sensationalized, there is some important truth to it. Cutting a healthy cornea is never a good idea, and that’s why I stopped doing it 8 years ago. Regardless of whether the surgeon cuts with a metal blade or a laser (Intralase), around 20% of your cornea is cut and lifted in LASIK. Cutting the flap causes a host of issues including dry eyes, glare and haloes, and problems with night vision. The article focuses on the two most prevalent... consequences of LASIK, dry eyes and glare and halos. I will address each in turn and explain to you why LASIK results in these issues for patients, and why eliminating the cutting avoids these issues. Prior to undergoing LASIK, patients blink every 5-10 seconds. This rapid blink rate is a result of the nerves in your cornea signaling your eye to blink when it becomes dry. LASIK, cuts and damages many of the nerves in the cornea and they never grow back. With less nerves in your cornea, you blink less often, every 10-15 seconds after LASIK. The result of this decreased blink rate is a painful, dry eye. After the flap is cut, the cornea is essentially divided into two parts forever. The flap is lifted, the laser is done and the flap is replaced on the eye. This creates a sandwich configuration where the flap meets the rest of the eye. When light rays enter your eye, they hit this new interface of the cornea and scatter. This scattering effect results in patients experiencing glare and haloes, that are more noticeable at night. 8 years ago I decided to focus my practice exclusively on non-cutting LASEK, (as opposed to LASIK as discussed in this article). Not only do my patients have better results they do not suffer from any of the negative consequences associated with LASIK, including dry eyes and glare and haloes. If you wear glasses or contact- lenses, come see for yourself why my post-LASEK patients are glasses and contact lens-free without the debilitating problems that are described in this article.

January is Glaucoma Awareness Month. Glaucoma is known as the silent thief of sight because, in the most common form, there are typically no early symptoms until significant and irreversible damage has already occurred. Getting regular eye exams can prevent glaucoma from sneaking up on you. Call us to schedule your annual eye exam! 212-475-9797

How long does Touchless PRK take? The laser takes 8 seconds per diopter, so if you’re a -3.00, it’d take 24 seconds. Of course, Dr. Moskowitz spends a lot more time explaining the procedure and measuring your eye to make sure he gets the right measurements.
