Early morning visitors...

Mount Hope Cemetery 26.10.2020

Today, on Election Day, we remember the women and men who have fought for the right to vote. If you are visiting Susan B. Anthony’s gravesite today, please keep in mind that: Visitors may access the gravesite between the hours of 8 a.m. 9 p.m. All cemetery gates will be closed at 9 p.m. All those who are still inside the cemetery at that time will be allowed to stay in line, but no new visitors may enter.... After 4 p.m., visitors should park on Robinson Drive and walk across Mt. Hope Avenue to the cemetery entrance. This will be the entrance closest to the gravesite. All visitors will be required to wear masks and hand sanitizer stations will be in place. City staff will be on hand to facilitate lines, answer questions and provide assistance. Social distancing will be enforced.

Are you looking for Someone Laid to Rest at Mount Hope? Many of Mount Hope’s interment records have been converted to electronic formats and some information is available online. If you’re searching for an ancestor, cemetery interment records through 2002 may be found at the University of Rochester's cemetery records web site. The Rochester Genealogical Society, Inc.'s web site houses digitized plot maps for Mount Hope Cemetery on their web site at https://rbscp.lib.rochester.edu/mthope/search

Ida Jane Anderson was the first registered nurse in New York State. Born in Canada in 1869, she came to Rochester at the age of 18. Originally a dress maker, she later enrolled in and graduated from the Rochester Homeopathic Hospital of Nursing in 1902. She actively campaigned to pass the Nurse Act of 1903 which established to register trained nurses. During a smallpox epidemic in 1903 she nursed patients at Hope Hospital which was located behind St. Mary's in Hospital in Rochester. Later she also treated victims of a typhoid epidemic in the southern tier of New York State. She spent the rest of her career as a nurse up until her death in 1958. Her burial site is located in Range 3, Lot 416. Text Source: Buried Treasures in Mount Hope Cemetery, Rochester, New York by Richard O. Reisem #RochesterHistory #mounthopecemetery
