#FBF From the Mount Sinai Archives Blog: Mount Sinai in a Time of EpidemicTyphus, 1915 Mount Sinai physicians have a long tradition of making important contributions to the scientific literature. A good example is from the 1910s, when typhus swept the world, killing thousands of people. Mount Sinai’s Trustees took the unusual step of agreeing to fund a trip to gather blood specimens in the Balkans, where there was a typhus outbreak. The story shows Mount Sinai’s commitment to research and developing new treatments during times of crisis.

Mount Sinai Medical Center in Manhattan was one of the first hospitals in the country to develop an antibody test, which was available by late March. Since then, about 45,000 people have emailed the hospital, asking how to donate their antibody-rich plasma to New Yorkers fighting the virus. ‘We had more interest than I ever could have imagined,’ said Dr. Ania Wajnberg, who runs the hospital’s new antibody donor identification program and whose inbox was flooded with thousands of emails a day from prospective donors.

During a Pandemic, Mount Sinai’s Class of 2020 MD and PhD Graduates Receive Their Degrees It was a most unusual commencement ceremony on Friday, May 15, for the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, an event that was prerecorded and livestreamed to the geographically scattered members of the Class of 2020. For this commencement, graduates received their degrees not from the stage at New York City’s Lincoln Center, with all the hoopla associated with large celebratory crowds, but from the isolation of their homes.

#FBF Thirty years ago, in 1980, the Alumni changed their name to the Associated Alumni of The Mount Sinai Medical Center. Since 1969, the name had been the Associated Alumni of The Mount Sinai Hospital and School of Medicine. This was adopted when the Association voted to include all graduates of the new Mount Sinai School of Medicine. The 1980 version lasted until 1992, when it became The Mount Sinai Alumni. This image is from 1982 that shows Dr. Morris Bender presenting the Gold Headed Cane to Dr. Arthur H. Aufses, Jr.
