The first health care workers throughout the Mount Sinai Health System received the first new #COVID19 vaccine on Tuesday, December 15. For many, it was an exciting and emotional moment. For these front-line workers, and for the Health System, receiving the #vaccine represented a key milestone in the continuing fight against the #pandemic, and a critical first step in what remains a long journey back to normal for the New York metropolitan area. Afterward, some took a moment to explain why they were eager to receive the new vaccine: https://mshs.co/dY #MountSinaiToday

Arun Sinha had one goal: to climb Mount Everest. For nearly a decade, he kept this goal in sight. Arun, who is now 56, was in shape and often walked 50 flights of stairs a day at work for exercise. There was only one thing standing in his way: medical clearance from a physician. It was at the doctor’s office that Arun learned that he had several severely blocked arteries. He could not be cleared for the trip. ... Dr. Puskas is a world leader in minimally invasive robotic surgery and performs many such procedures, but in Arun’s case, a blockage in the left anterior descending artery was intramyocardialburied deep in the muscle of the heart. So Dr. Puskas performed open-heart surgery. All three main arteries required bypass, and one required two bypasses, he said. Arun’s surgery was a success, and took place on the same day he would have climbed Mount Everest Base Camp. Eventually, he signed up to climb Mount Kilimanjaro this past summer/fall. In September 2020, Arun completed a 100-mile hike over 26 rugged mountains and about 20,000 elevation gain along the Appalachian Trail, similar to Mount Everest Base Campan achievement for any hiker, not to mention one who has had multiple bypass surgery: https://mshs.co/dd

The mRNA technology used to create the first two #COVID19 vaccines from Pfizer Inc., and Moderna, Inc. will undoubtedly change the course of vaccine development for years to come. Both companies have shown that the #vaccines are extraordinary, says Dr. Peter Palese. Both mark the first time mRNA technology has ever been approved for use in a vaccine: https://mshs.co/cb #MountSinaiToday
