Move Well Physical Therapy 13.07.2021

"To Stretch or Not to Stretch." That is the question we will be discussing during the University at Buffalo's Lunch Series. Topics on this lunch menu include:... Static vs Dynamic stretching. When and How? Old School vs. New School. Just the facts: A look at the evidence. I promise to roll with the Shakespearean theme and shed light through thy yonder window. And, I won't leave out sharing some insight with my favorite tools TRX Training and Therabody. And, finally: Love all, trust a few, do wrong to none. - W. Thumbs up for Fall Prevention Day!! Don't Fall. Give your PT a call! The numbers don't lie: 1 in 3 people aged 65 and older fall each year. In other words, 12,000,000!! Most are preventable... PT is the solution!! A sound PT assessment and program can increase balance, improve lower body mobility, enhance walking ability, improve reaction time and increase strength/endurance!... Thank you @alanna and Joanna Studer for dropping knowledge at the Clarence Senior Center, and representing PT's and PTA's everywhere! Don't FALL behind... and PLEASE share this important topic! #goldengoniometer #APTA #physicaltherapy #balance #gait #neuro

Adapting to the times by presenting some Zoom lectures to the PT classes at @dyouvillecollege . It is strange to teach a class when you can’t see the students, but we’re thankful to have the technology that allows even that to happen! #zoom #class #pt #dpt #dyc

Had the whole crew getting after it for an early morning workout! Exploring some partner exercises to train reaction ability. Threw it in an already challenging single leg Pallof press. #movewell #moveoften #fitness #stability

We have been marching our way back to normalcy with this great first week back in the clinic. Biggest takeaways regarding safety: -going maskless from a distance has seemed easiest and most comfortable during movements -close proximity interactions wearing masks for treatment, evaluation, and temperature taking have gone as smooth as we could hope for... Thank you to everyone for complying with our rules!! You’re all tied for the best. In order to comply with rules and guidelines we are under from a legal and ethical perspective, we are requiring/asking the following: -if you feel symptomatic for anything that COULD seem COVID related, please don’t come in. We will reschedule you to a day you are healthy with no cancellation fee. -we will be taking your forehead temperature when you arrive. Any temp over 99.9F and we will have to send you home (no fee, don’t worry, we just want everyone healthy) -please w...ash your hands before and after your session -during hands-on treatment the PT and our clients will both need to wear a face covering -during movement/exercise training, no masks are required by the clients but our PTs will still wear them if in close proximity (6 feet or closer). We can maintain this policy because we only work with one client at a time. -we will be thoroughly sanitizing all equipment used. If that creates a short wait time, we are sorry, and we are trying to leave some time between scheduled sessions Thank you!! We can’t wait to see you all! #physicaltherapy #pt #buffalo #strength #fitness #health #covid19

Hopefully you can see a theme building here. Is it important to modify your training or movement practice around an injury that you have? Absolutely. Should you incorporate rehab stuff for that injury? For sure. But should that injury sideline you?? Should you have to let your muscles go dormant? Should the only muscles training endurance be the ones that keep your eyes open to watch more Netflix? Heck no. Get back in the yoga studio, the gym, on the roads.... just do it intelligently! Do it knowing how to prevent worsening your injury, and do it knowing how to improve it.

Close your eyes (hold on, read the next few sentences, then close them). Think about what your body is like. How it works. How it feels. What it does. Take a minute. (OK now close them and wait that minute). What did you think? How much of what you thought is about what your body IS capable of? How much of what you thought is about what you AREN'T capable of? How much of what you thought about was some pain you expereince, an injury or a surgery you had? If that's the case, w...e want to guide you. Because we know that you are vastly more than that. That issue you experience is a very small percentage of you as a whole and it does not deserve the power you've given it. We want to adjust your thinking to identify with the positive aspects of your abilities and experiences. And we also want to remove those negative ones for you.

So you have an injury. That sucks. Sorry to hear about that. Let's fix it. BUT. Please let us do more than just work on this injury. You're an athlete. You're powerful, strong, flexible, and have good endurance. Some types of training will have to go on hold while we rehab this injury, but not all of it! Can we keep you strength training in some ways that don't bother this injury? Can we build power from your lower body while your shoulder heals? Can we keep cardio up on the bike while your foot recovers? The body is amazing and there's tons of things we can always do even if we can't do everything. You will heal better and be a better athlete when this injury is behind you when you stay as active as possible during it. Need help figuring that process out? You know who to call.

It will be a while, but word on the streets is a vaccine will likely come your way that you might have interest in. So check this: This study found that exercise (both regular and also shortly before receiving a vaccine) improve how well your immune system develops antibodies and protects you in the future from getting that virus! So get moving! What better time than now?... Study is from the journal Frontiers in Immunology. Thanks Barbell Medicine for the overview in your podcast. @ Buffalo, New York

The people have spoken. So we have to start wondering: are the exercise methods I choose dependent on my equipment available, my preferences, my knowledge, or my accountability? Nothing wrong with choosing strength over cardio! Especially if your coach is programming it that way on purpose. But if you’re someone who knows they should be including cardio, are we slacking on it? We know we have the option of cardio from a knowledge and equipment standpoint. It’s often not our preference to do it, and we know we don’t have the accountability of being with your coach/trainer/gym partners. No judgement! Just a good reflection opportunity to identify what we let stop us. And with that awareness, maybe we can push past it! #awareness #training #fitness #cardio #health #mindfulness #crossfit #running #cycling #strength
