The office for Moxie Ridge is a desk in the living room addition of a small 200 year-old farmhouse. It’s about 10 feet from the huge masonry stove that heats the house in the Winter and is surrounded by windows on the other sides. I can’t say it’s the most aesthetically pleasing setup, but I can still see what’s going on farmside even when I’m handling the running-a-business part of things, so it works for me. I’ve been in the office more than usual the last few weeks workin...g on a couple of big announcements that we’re excited to share with you all. Both of them will help Moxie Ridge continue to flourish over the next several years and deepen our relationship with the communities we serve. I’ll be announcing the first one later this month and our Patreon Supporters will be getting a sneak peek in the next week! In the meantime, enjoy this view from one of the office windows

Thrilled to be included in the current issue of Hudson Valley Wine Magazine in their article about terroir in cheese. Food and wine writer Kathleen Willcox wrote an excellent and accessible piece about what terroir means for cheesemaking and highlighting a few producers in the region that are passionate enough (and crazy enough) to make it the foundation of the foods we produce. It takes a lot of work and a lot of commitment to make food in this way and I'm grateful to be i...ncluded in this feature article that honors that work and educates readers on why it matters. You can pick up the issue now. https://hvwinemag.com/the-power-of-place-in-hudson-valley-/

So the good news is that after a long hay shortage that meant 2x-4x hay prices and no long term sources once our main two dried up, we’ve finally got our first wagon of the season! The bad news is I’m picking it up and unloading it solo . I’ll be posting progress in our stories and skipping the gym today. #smallfarm #nyfarms #hayseason #goatfarm #livestocklifestyle #haywagon #johndeere #johndeere4044m

Can you spot the lamb? Cause she found the best spot This little girl is doing great and she is FULL of life. Again, I can’t stress enough how much you don’t want unplanned bottle lambs as a farmer. Yes, she’s super cute and sassy and awesome, but like all lambs, she is at risk to bloat when on a bottle and she must be properly enriched both mentally and physically so as not to develop problems or bad behavior later on. She will be at the bottom of the flock hierarchy when ...reintroduced to the flock and there is a high risk that she won’t be fully accepted socially, which can also result in problems. Getting a ewe to accept a baby that isn’t hers (called grafting) is NOTORIOUSLY hard, but we’ll give it a shot anyway when the opportunity arises. All this to say that there are so many challenges to face with unplanned bottle lambs, so we are unabashedly reaping all the adorable benefits that come along as well. You know, just to balance it out.

Picked up the first 1,000 pounds of whey-fed, acorn- and hickory nut-finished pork today from the butcher today! We will have it at our markets starting this weekend until it’s gone - USQ Fridays and Saratoga Saturdays. This year our Patreon supporters get first crack with pre-order access and pickup at markets (link in bio). Our pork is seasonal and a big part of what supports us during the Winters, so we’ll be posting more about why it’s so special in the weeks ahead. It’s kind of A Thing and we anticipate it selling pretty quickly, so, you know, get it while you can.

It's been a rough year for this small farm, but it has also pushed us to be more resourceful, more creative, and more thoughtful about what and how we produce. As a part of this growth and to support the farm in the financial aftermath of the pandemic, we have just launched our Patreon project patreon.com/moxieridge and are thrilled to be sharing it with you! This is a video-driven, multi-year documentary short project that will live on patreon for our supporters. It is the p...lace where we will be sharing authentic stories from the farm - along fun stuff like this video - with the hopes of inspiring, empowering, and educating people about what it takes to produce food. (There will also be, like, a LOT of goat content.) And by telling these stories, in return we get secure financial support from our patrons. We see this project as a sustainable next step for Moxie Ridge Farm. These stories can be made and shared with thousands of people without stressing our infrastructure or decreasing the quality of our animals' lives or products. We can also put to work our farmer's Hollywood and production background ;) If you're interested in becoming a big part of a small farm, become a patron at patreon.com/moxieridge today If you're unable to financially support our Patreon project but want to support the farm, please share!
