The Hub's goals are to cultivate a sense of community among its members, to expand their professional networks, and to generate opportunities for career advancement and mentoring. Steve Cohen's second edition of The Sustainable City is out now! It dives deeper into the financing of sustainable infrastructure and initiatives and puts additional emphasis on the roles that individual citizens and varied stakeholders can play. It also reviews current trends in urban inequality and discusses whether a model of sustainability that embraces a multidimensional approach to development and a multistakeholder approach to decision making can foster social inclusion. It features many more examples and new international case studies spanning the globe. Check it out: https://cup.columbia.edu//the-sustainable-ci/9780231196550

Does this spark joy? Marie Kondo’s famous question used to cleanse our lives of ‘stuff’ is built upon by Sandra Goldmark, director of Campus Sustainability at Barnard College. Goldmark recently authored a book about people’s inherent need for ‘stuff’, positing that when this relationship is not stigmatized but instead considered mindfully, it results in improved health for both people and the planet. Check out her thoughts and tips for healthier consumption habits at the link below! https://blogs.ei.columbia.edu//sandra-goldmark-interview-/
The Thwaites Glacier in Antarctica has been monitored by climate change scientists for over two decades as an indicator of climate change. A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, found that subglacial lakes underneath this famous glacier have filled and drained twice in the past decade. The volume of water needed to fill the subglacial lakes indicates that the ice caps might be melting faster than previously thought. Check out more information on their research at the link below! https://blogs.ei.columbia.edu//thwaites-subglacial-lakes-/
"It really boils down to this: that all life is interrelated. We are all caught up in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied into a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one destiny, affects all indirectly." - Martin Luther King Jr.

Program Director, Steve Cohen, writes, "In this century, we are starting to see the development of organizational units that work to promote the principles of environmental sustainability. The professionals we are educating at Columbia and in a growing number of universities are being prepared for those roles and have already begun to fill them. Today, most of those running sustainability units are trained in other fields. As they retire they will be replaced by well-trained sustainability professionals."
