Dear Friends, Supporters, and MultiStages theatre artists: We hope this email finds you safe. Our hearts are with you on all fronts during this very difficult time in our nation and the world. As theatre makers, we exist to tell stories. To shine spotlights on injustice. To bring us together under one roof, be it the sky or a theatre to experience, learn from, and share the stories we choose to tell and the artists we choose to present. ... Today the streets are our stage. The stories are real. And the people are bleeding. No time for fiction. This is real and it hurts. This is the first email we have sent since the COVID-19 epidemic. I started this email numerous times these many months to say hello to everyone, but felt life was so overwhelming that it was difficult to find the words. Words of concern. Words of comfort. Words of inspiration. Words of lament. We have lost friends and family members to COVID, and it has been difficult to go forward. The theatre has been shut down, as we have been, and New York City has felt like a war zone, memories of a silent City post-911 ... I remember revising my artistic statement for our new works festival which premiered one week after 9-11. I wrote about the power of self expression and the laws of freedom of speech in the USA. Today we march in person (or in our sheltered homes) with the power of freedom of speech and our rights to assemble. We march because this has to stop. We march because Black Lives Matter. We march because justice is not served. We march with our Black and Brown friends and families who are still denied the fundamental rights of human decency and respect in the USA. We march and cry out, "No Justice No Peace!" And we will keep marching until that day comes. Thank you for your actions for freedom. Stay strong and safe. March on!
