#GoodNewsTues We are excited to feature one of our alums today, Kristen Blue. Kristen graduated MVCC's Airframe & Powerplant program in 2017 and was also a member of MVCC Aviation Club. She is now a Ground Operation Supervisor at Southwest Airlines. "When I decided to attend MVCC's Airframe and Powerplant program, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do for a career. All I knew was that I wanted to work with airplanes, and I needed a way to get my foot in the door of the aviation i...ndustry. I currently work for Southwest Airlines as a Ground Operation Supervisor. I help coordinate everything that happens while the aircraft is on the ground at the airport and at the airport gate. I help make sure our flights depart safety and on time. Although I chose a career path that doesn’t involve working on aircraft mechanically, my time at MVCC gave me a great knowledge base that helps me at work every single day. I’m so thankful for the A&P program and all the wonderful instructors that made my time there worthwhile." -Kristen Blue, Ground Operation Supervisor at Southwest Airlines. Thanks, Kristen! So happy you found a great career at Southwest! Stay in touch! #Aviation #AviationTech #GroundOperations #SouthwestCareer #Supervisor #AviationCareer #Aircraft #AviationJob #BrightFuture

#FlashbackFriday Sharing a fun memory of a past field trip with the 2017 Airframe and Powerplant cohort! Who remembers this field trip to D.C.? Students had the opportunity to spend two days immersing themselves in aviation history, visiting national museums and monuments, and attending aviation based IMAX presentations. Museums visited included the Smithsonian's Air and Space Museum located on the National Mall and the Smithsonian's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center located next ...to Dulles International Airport. These facilities are considered two of the finest aviation museums in the world. Aircraft on display included the original Spirit of St. Louis flown by Charles Lindberg to cross the Atlantic, the Bell X-1 flown by Chuck Yeager to break the sound barrier, the Space Shuttle Discovery, the Concorde, SpaceShipOne, and many others. Fun times! Pictured left to right on the steps of the Air and Space Museum: Instructor: Peter Abbe, Students: Gustavo Vega, Ryan Chow, Joe Underwood, @KristenBlue, Alexander Moore, Glenn Grigg, Evan Cox, Ben Boshart, @DerekNicol, @MichelleConklin, Colton Dyussen, and @KadinGoodspeed. Wrapping up Teacher Appreciation Week! Tom Jennings started full-time with MVCC's Airframe and Powerplant program in 2007. "Teaching in the A&P program gives me a rare opportunity to combine theory with practice. I get to teach Science, Math, and engineering principles, topics I love, then I get to help our students grow their understanding of those principles by applying them in the shop. There aren't very many places where an educator gets to do both. My favorite moment...s are when I see students realize that what we learn in class can actually be useful!" Thanks, Tom, for all your hard work! #AviationInstructor #AirframeTeacher #AircraftInstructor

Continuing Teacher Appreciation Week at MVCC's Airframe and Powerplant! Rick Mulvaney has been teaching at the program for 10 years. Rick is pictured on the left in the photo below, assisting a student during lab. "What I enjoy about teaching is the thought that I am helping to train smarter future aviation technicians." - Rick Mulvaney... Thank you, Rick, for all your hard work! Assistant Professor Pete Abbe is another vital part of MVCC's Airframe & Powerplant program, and started teaching in the program in January 2014. Pete is pictured here (fifth from the left, white jacket) with students from MVCC's Aviation Maintenance Technology Club on a 2018 field trip to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum and other tours in Washington, D.C. "My favorite part about teaching at MVCC's Aviation Maintenance Training Center is the relationships I am able to b...uild with my students. I have made lifelong friends and I have the satisfaction of knowing that I have been able to play a role in the lives and success of so many individuals." -- Pete Abbe Thank you, Pete, for all your hard work! #TeacherAppreciation #TeacherAppreciationWeek #AviationInstructors #MVCCInstructors #Aviation

We are in the middle of National Teacher Appreciation Week, and wanted to recognize a teacher who has been instructing students in aviation maintenance at MVCC for more than a decade. Todd Rankins (second from right in this photo with his students) was first hired as a consultant to provide guidance and assistance to the college as they looked into developing the A&P program in 2004-2006. He then stayed on as Technical Assistant & Teaching Assistant and started teaching as... an Adjunct Instructor one semester later. MVCC hired Todd as was a full time instructor in 2009. The most rewarding aspect of teaching in the Airframe and Powerplant program comes from the students who appreciate the experience and knowledge I bring into the classroom and lab, for my professional demeanor and for demonstrating good work ethics. Students who are highly motivated to learn and understand the aircraft and it's systems make teaching worthwhile and enjoyable. -Todd Rankins Thank you, Todd, for all your hard work! -MVCC Airframe and Powerplant #NationalTeacherWeek #ThankATeacher #MVCCInstructors #TeacherRecognition #AirframeInstructors #AircraftInstructors #AviationInstructors

Cockpit view of the Blue Angels with the Thunderbirds in flying formation over Washington, D.C.! The U.S. Navy Blue Angels and the Air Force Thunderbirds have been conducting amazing flying formations over several major cities to honor first responders and essential workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. What do you think? Is the cockpit view or the view from the ground (previous post) better? Happy Pilots Day! "Flight is freedom in its purest form, To dance with the clouds which follow a storm;... To roll and glide, to wheel and spin, To feel the joy that swells within; To leave the earth with its troubles and fly, And know the warmth of a clear spring sky; Then back to earth at the end of a day, Released from the tensions which melted away. Should my end come while I am in flight, Whether brightest day or darkest night; Spare me your pity and shrug off the pain, Secure in the knowledge that I'd do it again; For each of us is created to die, And within me I know, I was born to fly."
