https://mvcc.kanopy.com/video/brother-outsider Official Selection at the Sundance Film Festival. "On November 20, 2013, Bayard Rustin was posthumously awarded the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama. Who was this man? He was there at most of the important events of the Civil Rights Movement - but always in the background. BROTHER OUTSIDER asks "Why?" It presents a vivid drama, intermingling the personal and the political, about one of the most ...enigmatic figures in 20th-century American history." - Kanopy As an openly and unabashedly gay man, Bayard Rustin played an important role in the civil rights and gay liberation movements. Springing from his Quaker upbringing. Rustin's passion for causes like desegregation and integration, injustices against people of color, and, later in life, gay liberation made him a key activist and advisor to several civil rights leaders, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Being openly gay sparked much controversy throughout his activist career, eventually forcing him behind-the-scenes. Nonetheless, as an activist and promoter of nonviolent civil disobedience, Rustin served as one of the prominent organizers of the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the 1963 March on Washington. Later in life, he would embrace the gay liberation movement, encouraging many to come out and seek LGBTQ+ rights. His legacy lives on in today's LGBTQIA+ activism, embracing his sexuality as a quintessential part of his identity. Photo by Walter Naegle
"We need, in every community, a group of angelic troublemakers." - Bayard Rustin

Jackson, I AM NOT YOUR NEGRO explores the continued peril America faces from institutionalized racism. - Kanopy Born in 1924 in Harlem, James Baldwin is famous for his literature involving the complex interactions between race, sexuality, and faith. Informed by his own experiences as a black gay man, he wrote Giovanni’s Room and Just Above My Head, featuring black and whit...e LGBTQ+ characters and was among the first American authors to talk about gay experiences openly in literature. Moreover, he was a fierce activist, participating in the March on Washington and the Selma to Montgomery March for civil rights.
