Classic Greek mythology is the topic of today's Museum From Home by Curator of 19th-Century American Art Miranda Hofelt. The United States was less than 50 years old when Joshua Shaw created this painting. The newly formed country was obsessed with origin stories from Greek and Roman mythology. Shaw bolstered this national preoccupation by painting a scene from Virgil’s Aeneid. This epic tale tells the story of the Trojan prince Aeneas, who the gods ordain to journey from ...the fallen city of Troy to establish what would become the Roman Empire. Although the title focuses on the star-crossed lovers, Shaw hides Dido and Aeneas riding on horseback in the far right. The central elements in the scene, instead, are a wine-filled urn and dancing maenads, female followers of Bacchus, the god of agriculture, wine, and fertility. The wine and maenads may refer to the love affair between Dido and Aeneas, which climaxes during the hunt. But the gathering storm in the painting’s upper left foreshadows a tragic ending when Jupiter commands Aeneas to follow his destiny, leaving a bereft Dido, who commits suicide. Stories of heroes choosing duty and nation over love reoccurred in American art throughout the early 1800s. Shaw’s painting exemplifies how artists incorporated mythological scenes to teach patriotic virtues, while also elevating landscape to the status of ‘high art.' Joshua Shaw, "Dido and Aeneas Going to the Hunt," 1831 (English, 1776-1860; active in the United States, after 1817), oil on canvas, 36 1/2 x 49 1/4 x 4 in. Museum Purchase, 60.197 See more
Today's Museum From Home by Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art Mary Murray captures an election night scene from the Roaring '20s. Glenn Coleman moved to New York from Indianapolis in 1905 and became a student of artist Robert Henri. Henri urged young painters to travel around town making drawings and studying contemporary life; he believed the art of the new 20th-century had to be of its own time. Coleman heeded this instruction, sketching his way from Coney Island, thr...ough the Bowery and the docks at Coenties Slip, to Greenwich Village. In 1928, Coleman turned his drawings from 20 years earlier into a suite of twelve lithographic prints. "Bonfire (Election Night)" is from that collection. The imagery of an older city may have been a nostalgic trip for the artist. With the easy wealth of the Roaring ‘20s, skyscrapers sprang up in smart city blocks, by contrast, the neighborhoods Coleman depicted were among New York’s oldest, full of quirky streets lined with human-scaled buildings. There was always a teeming crowd on parade for Coleman’s inquisitive eye and pencil. Harpo Marx was a child in that old New York. In his autobiography, "Harpo Speaks!," the comedian recollected the Tammany Hall-era political machine that elected its preferred candidate for Mayor every two years. Marx described it as a holiday that lasted for a day and a half, with beer and cigars passed around to men and firecrackers for kids. In the evening, boys dragged found wood and lit big bonfires; Harpo said, Grandpa enjoyed the sight as much as I did . . . He pulled his chair closer to the window and lit the butt of his Tammany stogie. : Glenn O. Coleman (American, 1887-1932), "Bonfire (Election Night)," 1928, lithograph on paper, 13 x 18 in. In Paris 1913, together with fellow American expatriate Stanton Macdonald-Wright, Morgan Russell founded the modernist movement they called Synchromism, meaning with color. We can recognize "Cosmic Synchromy" as one of Russell’s most important Synchromist paintings, produced at the moment when he had condently developed his own original style, which would preserve his place in the history of modernist painting. : Morgan Russell (American, 1886 - 1953), "Cosmic Synchromy,"... 1913-1914 Oil on canvas, 23 x 20 x 1 1/2 in. Hedda Sterne composed this prismatic painting by balancing horizontal and vertical lines that simultaneously create the illusion of three-dimensional space as well as emphasize the two-dimensional planarity of the picture's surface. The painting's subtle, warm palette of shimmering golden hues, ranging from ochre to lemon yellow, suggests a light-infused, cathedral-like space. Sterne employs these formalist, abstract painting devices to convey deeply spiritual concerns. :...
