Stargazing with Dante: Reading the Divine Comedy on the 700th Anniversary of Dante’s Death Presentation by Mark Brummitt (Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School)

Nazareth College Casa Italiana 05.05.2021

Cari Amici della Casa, Please join us this evening at 6pm for a celebration event as 2021 marks 700 years since the death of Dante Alighieri, the Father of the Italian Language. Our special guest this evening, Mark Brummitt of Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School, will be presenting the following lecture:... Stargazing with Dante: Reading the Divine Comedy on the 700th Anniversary of Dante’s Death Materially and morally, Dante’s cosmos is long gone. Copernicus has since reoriented the Heavens; the Western Church has even remapped Hell. Far from finding himself irrelevant, however, Dante continues to enjoy a robust afterlife. Already this century there have been 15 new translations of Dante’s Divine Comedy into Englishgiven there were 52 in the 20th century, I’d say that the publication rate is actually picking up speed. In order to account for this phenomenonwhich surely cannot be explained by the demands of college syllabuses aloneI shall turn to Boccaccio, T. S. Eliot, D. L. Sayers and C. S. Lewis (among others) as guides. As we examine their insights into Dante’s ongoing significance, we shallI hopeglimpse something of Dante himself still beckoning from the page. His invitation, as pertinent as ever, is to come on outside and look up again at the stars. The presentation will be in English with a Q&A to follow. The link to access the Zoom meeting is below. Please make sure to enter in the passcode below when prompted. Zoom Link: https://naz.zoom.us/j/95865964976 Passcode: 113311 Grazie e ci "vediamo" stasera!
