Veterinary scholarships available! Learn high volume spay/neuter from the experts! Too many cats, too few resources. All across the country, communities working to reduce their feral and stray cat populations are hampered by a shortage of affordable spay/neuter care. For many, restrictions imposed by COVID-19 over the past year have only made matters worse. We can help! The Neighborhood Cats Veterinary Scholarship Program is offering a limited number of 2021 awards for high-...quality, high-volume spay/neuter training at the ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance in Asheville, NC. Each recipient will attend 4 days of intensive training with the Alliance’s expert instructors. Travel expenses and temporary license fees will be covered by the scholarship, and training fees will be waived by the ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance. To be eligible, you must be a veterinarian with a current license to practice. Veterinarians of all experience levels are welcome to apply. The scholarship program paves the way for doctors and clinics to safely and effectively boost surgical capacity - and help more cats! Training will take place in fall/winter of 2021. Nolan's sight is gone. His will to live isn't. https://donate.neighborhoodcats.org/give/341948/ The last thing Nolan ever saw, before his eyes died, was an ordinary backyard behind a red brick house in Brownsville, Brooklyn. It was a small yard, enclosed by a rusting chain link fence and dotted with trees. Other cats lived behind the house as well, their daily meals set out by the elderly tenant in a neat row of bowls. Months earlier, Nolan had stumbled into the backyard col...ony, footsore, heartsick and lonely. To the ragged tom, the dim shapes of cats and dishes, and the smell of fresh food, must have felt as warm and reassuring as a fire flickering on a hearth. Sofia, the cats’ 82-year-old caretaker, observed how the shy white cat waited for his colony mates to finish their meals before making his slow, deliberate way to his dish. Sometimes, she’d talk to him as he ate and try to draw closer. Nolan always reacted with fear, flattening himself to the ground before skittering off into the shadows. With her own vision failing, Sofia couldn't see the untreated infections that were steadily blinding the poor stray. Eventually, a visiting relative realized something was badly wrong and called Neighborhood Cats for help. We quickly trapped Nolan and brought him to our veterinarian. Sadly, the damage is done. His eyes no longer function and must be surgically removed to prevent future issues. Nolan has also been diagnosed with severe dental disease and his last few teeth, all painfully broken and decayed, have to be extracted as well. In his foster home, Nolan’s caregiver often speaks his name and lays a gentle hand on his fuzzy head. He responds by hissing like a tough guy, but never lifts a paw against her. We think old memories of happier times are beginning to stir and before long, he’ll be ready to climb into laps, ask for belly rubs, and purr as his cottony fur is brushed and combed. He can still have a long and joyful life - if we can give him the extensive care he needs so urgently. Won't you help? Please click the link above to make your gift, and save sweet Nolan today.

UPDATE - We're fighting to save Frostie's sight https://donate.neighborhoodcats.org/give/335052/ When Neighborhood Cats trapped Frostie this past March, it was just the start of his long road to recovery. Jade, our New Jersey trapper, was working on a large feral colony when she spotted the young cat in the shadows. She knew he was in trouble. Instead of luminous golden eyes in his furry face, there were only dark, red-rimmed slits. As soon as she caught him, poor Frostie cr...ied out, partly in fear, partly because of the hurt that wouldn’t go away. Right then and there, Jade promised him we’d do all we could to make him well. The next day our veterinarian found multiple, serious eye problems and decided a consultation with a specialist was needed. It took extra time to see the ophthalmologist but we finally have a complete diagnosis. The optic nerve of Frostie’s left eye has atrophied, probably from an old injury. Sadly, the resulting blindness is irreversible. The lashes of both eyes grow inwards instead of out, endlessly jabbing his delicate corneas. Swelling, scarring and inflammation have been aggravated by a viral infection and are especially severe in the right eye, which also suffers from a dangerous inability to produce tears. The fight to save Frostie’s sight has begun. For two weeks now, he’s been getting potent new medications to combat the virus that’s plagued him for so long. In addition, each day his right eye is gently bathed in artificial tears. Soon he’ll undergo surgery to repair the inward-turning lashes. At that time, to spare him further pain, the blind left eye will be removed. Throughout his ordeal Frostie has been pure sweetness and light. He knows the people around him now are friends, and shows it with non-stop grateful purrs and head-bumps. In the weeks ahead, we’ll share more updates about his progress. For now, a big thanks to all who have made this very good boy’s treatment possible.

CHUMLEY IS A HIT ON BROADWAY! How one sick, forgotten cat beat the odds - thanks to you https://donate.neighborhoodcats.org/give/318496/ It’s been four months since we introduced you to Chumley, a senior cat who was desperately ill when he was found on a pile of leaves next to a wintry sidewalk in Crown Heights. Back then the poor, scared boy was suffering from a slew of ailments. He had advanced dental disease that caused constant, searing pain. A severe respiratory infecti...on forced him to gasp for each breath. Swarms of fleas had drained his strength, leaving him anemic and unsteady on his feet. His life nearly ended there on that cold, lonely street. But Chumley was saved in the nick of time because of you. When a Good Samaritan found the suffering cat, she placed an urgent call to Neighborhood Cats. We quickly trapped Chumley and hurried him to our vet for emergency treatment. Then we turned to our friends to ensure he’d receive the hospital care, dental surgery, medications and long recovery he needed. It took time but Chumley rewarded us by blossoming from a frail shell of a cat into a handsome boy with a shine on his ebony coat and a shy purr that starts off low and builds as you pet him until his whole body vibrates with contentment. Chumley - now named Bo - has been adopted by a stage actor and now lives in Manhattan’s Theatre District. When he’s not looking out a sunny window at the bustling cityscape below or napping with one of the other two resident cats, he’s usually curled on the couch next to his Dad, blinking sleepily and purring that magical purr. Our sweet old timer is living the good life. From Bo and all of us at Neighborhood Cats - thank you! Want to help us save more Chumleys? Click the link above to get started.
