With a special shoutout to the heroes at NCS who have kept our supportive housing and non-residential programs open throughout the pandemic. Thank you so much to the St. James' Church, Manhattan parishioners who came to the NCS Residence last week to make baked ziti and salad for our residents. What is the NCS Residence? The NSC Residence is a supportive housing facility on the Upper East Side that houses 65 individuals with a history of homelessness. Most live with mental illness, often accompanied by substance use. Our residents’ health and wellness have been seriously affected by extreme poverty, homelessness, mental illness, substance abuse, poor nutrition, smoking, and trauma.... We provide a full range of services including money management, vocational and educational programs, meals, and recreational activities all aimed at enhancing and supporting residents’ independent living. Social workers, case managers, and a part-time psychiatrist provide case management and mental health counseling. Tenants also enjoy common areas for activities and meals, including a kitchen and dining area, TV lounge and rooftop atrium, terrace, and garden. 3,495. That’s the number of meals that were donated to the NCS Residence between March and September. And each of those meals were distributed by two staff members: Na'eema and Lydia. They stepped up and coordinated all of the meal deliveries, going above and beyond their job requirements to make sure that the NCS residents had meals they could safely eat in their rooms when it wasn’t safe for them to eat together. Na’eema was working part-time for NCS as the CHIRP human... services professional and joined the staff at the NCS Residence full time as a Case Manager. Adding Na'eema’s knowledge of community resources and experience working with vulnerable populations has been extremely helpful during the pandemic, said Robert Yancey, Chief Program Officer. Lydia, who retired in 2018, came out of retirement when the NCS Residence needed additional help at the start of the pandemic. The residents already knew and respected her and in addition to delivering meals, she has been training the younger staff and sharing her positive spirit with them. I can’t think of a bigger commitment to NCS’s mission, shared NCS Residence Program Director Margarita Ramos. Thank you Na’eema and Lydia for your dedication to NCS and the clients we serve.
