Eve Hlavatovic, Spring 2021 Communications Intern, interviews Purchase alumna Chelsea Spengemann ’11 (MA Art History) about how her experiences as a graduate student opened the door for her to curate an exhibition for the Neuberger Museum of Art and paved the way to her current career. __ #NEUStudentVoices Purchase College, SUNY Purchase College Alumni Association https://www.purchase.edu//5604-alumni-spotlight-meet-chels
"Last week, the museum presented a conversation among the Mayhew family. Richard, the father, is a well-known artist and educator. Daughter Ina, a production designer for featured films and television, and son Scott, a creative director and graphic designer, both went to Purchase. Our own Curator of Education Diana Puglisi moderated. One of the most striking things to me about the conversation was the ways in which Ina and Scott pointed to the burgeoning of their ways of thinking about interdisciplinarity Purchase College, SUNY or what I sometimes have referred to in my writing as the promise of Purchase. It’s something extraordinary that I’ve heard time and time again..." Continue reading on #backstory: https://bit.ly/3u1oXOz

#NEUPicks, a collection exhibition currently on view, draws artworks from the museum’s permanent collection of over 6,000 objects. Communities close to us were invited to select their favorite work of art and tell us why they love it. Volunteer Museum Educators and Neuberger Museum of Art Staff chose a variety of items. Some are regularly on view, while others haven’t been seen in years. The common theme among them is that they resonated with our community and are thought of ...often and loved. What's your story? Is there a work from our collection you miss and would love to see on view. Comment! This work by Beverly Semmes, "Orange Hole", was chosen by Diana Puglisi, Curator of Education, Youth and Adult Programs and Social Media Strategist: "Before working at the museum, in graduate school in Boston at Massachusetts College of Art and Design I stumbled upon an exhibition in 2008 curated by #HelainePosner titled 'Great Women Artists'. So many influential contemporary women artists were in the exhibition and I remember feeling bummed that I missed it. I have always been enamored by #BeverlySemmes' work-- her colors and handle on materials, the feeling of presence/absence through empty dresses and vessels, and the monumental quality she achieves with, in some cases, transforming only fabric. I selected a work in the collection that I have never seen on view before during my time at the museum, and I did it for just that reason. It's one of the works I wanted to see while feeling sad in 2015 when I discovered I missed an exhibition 7 years prior, that was so close to home, with many of my favorite artists." #neucollection __ Image Courtesy of the Artist & SUSAN INGLETT GALLERY, NYC Beverly Semmes, Orange Hole, 2005, velvet; terracotta and flashe, 2 parts, 168 x 18 inches (dress), 13 x 10 inches (pot), Collection Friends of the Neuberger Museum of Art, Museum purchase w/ funds provided by Neuberger Museum of Art Collectors’ Colloquium & Jacqueline and Arthur Walker

#backstory: How do I convey my appreciation for what you made happen with us today? What do you think of when you hear the word freedom? How about the words healing and justice? Be a part of #ConnectiveCollective, an exhibition and a concept, an evolving conglomerate inclusive of artists talks, projects, and workshops exploring healing, justice, and the power of listening in collaboration with For Freedoms. Participate virtually by sharing your voice. Choose a prompt "Justice For" - "Awaken To" - "Healing To" - "Listen For" and #comment. Rewinding for a mome...nt, we kicked off this initiative in our community with a student led Town Hall in the fall of 2020. Following that we collaborated with School of Art + Design’s Community Design class created large-scale graphics reflecting this dialogue, now publicly viewable on the windows of multiple campus buildings. Most recently, Eric Gottesman’s For Freedoms class intervened in the show throughout this semester with a range of projects around the idea of institutional critique. Fast forward, we just opened to public last week, and now in the gallery, visitors have the opportunity to enter into this exchange of ideas by adding their wishes for freedom to a growing collection of For Freedoms lawn signs, and to display their responses to the town hall concerns regarding political disenfranchisement, judicial equity, racism, debt and food scarcity. #The2020Awakening

#backstory: I’m always so proud of the ways in which the Neuberger features so importantly in the work of Purchase College, SUNY. A key component in then Governor Nelson Rockefeller’s vision for the Fine and Performing Arts campus of the SUNY - The State University of New York system, the Neuberger has sat at the heart of the College since its founding in 1969... This edition of #InsidetheNEU explores the life and work of contemporary abstract artist Jose Parla Studio whose first solo museum exhibition in New York City, José Parlá: It’s Yours, is currently on view at the The Bronx Museum of the Arts through January 10, 2021. In January, the Neuberger’s Recent Acquisitions exhibition featured No Space / Non Place #1 (2017), one of the four large format works that had been commissioned for José Parlá: No Space / Non Place, a public proj...ect that was on view from December 2017 to April 2018 at NEU SPACE I 42, the Neuberger’s exhibition venue in New York City. The 72 inch by 72 inch acrylic and powdered pigment on canvas was donated to the Neuberger by the artist. José’s work is filled with raw emotion, said Neuberger Museum Assistant Curator Avis Larson, who worked with Parlá on No Space / Non Place as well as Post No Bills: Public Walls as Studio and Source, an exhibition at the Neuberger in Fall 2016. https://www.purchase.edu//p/4094-inside-the-neu-jose-parla
We have a new #NEUtoDoKids project for you! Storytelling: Adding imaginative conversation to art inspired by the artist Samuel "Wood" Gaylor. In this week’s project, young creators will imagine the conversations that are happening in Village Party, a 1927 painting by the American Modernist painter Samuel Wood Gaylor. On the pages of the worksheet students will find images of the paintingincluding a few close-ups so they can see the detailsand questions to get them thinking about what the people portrayed in the painting are saying to one another. The stories can be funny or dramatic there’s no right or wrong answer in storytelling! #linkinprofile #westchestermoms #kidsartactivity #museumfromhome https://www.purchase.edu//profil/4096-project-storytelling

#backstory This morning, the Neuberger staff had the distinct pleasure of spending time with Purchase College’s new president, Dr. Milagros Peña. Dr. Peña, who prefers to go by Milly, was selected for Purchase College, SUNY after a highly competitive search and we are all delighted to have her join us. In her meeting today with the Neuberger team, Milly emphasized not only her love of museums, but also the ways in which, growing up as a kid in the New York City school system..., she had lots of opportunities to visit some of the world's best museums through school field trips. She told us how those experiences helped shape her view of the world and how she believed that the same was true of the countless students who had already visited the Neuberger Museum and those who would visit us in the future. A great first day for us with the new president. Welcome Milly! Tracy Fitzpatrick, Director Neuberger Museum of Art https://www.purchase.edu//5106-backstory-a-new-president-f
