We hope you’re enjoying the great outdoors this weekend. Perhaps you can go on an adventure and explore a new town nearby? In 1908, artists and romantic partners Vasily Kandinsky and Gabriele Münter, enjoyed a sojourn in the bucolic village of Murnau in the Bavarian Alps. They were charmed by the experience and went on to paint many scenes featuring the picturesque town and its environs. Kandinsky's, Murnau: Street with Women, pictured here, dates to the initial year of the...ir visit. This painting still shocks today with its bold brushstrokes and jarring paletteblue, green, red, and yellow all clash and vibrate together like cymbals. In the lower right corner, a trio of women gazes at the viewer as if startled during their daily stroll. The vivid colors, disassociated from representational forms, reflect Kandinsky's response to the French Fauves, whose radical work he had seen firsthand in Paris. Kandinsky had visited the city when his own artpaintings, woodcuts, and decorative pieceswere included in the 1906 Salon d'Automne. Autumn is very much here, and as the leaves turn colors, so too do the compositions of Alexei Jawlensky (18641941). Although the artist’s Variations series is grounded in the landscape genre, Jawlensky achieved considerable variety within the restricted theme. Some were inspired by specific seasons, and he adroitly shifted his palette to reflect the moods evoked by different times of the year. For example, the orange, yellow and red tones found in Variation: Autumn (19...17), shown here, are emblematic of the season. Despite how abstract these compositions become, the outlines of the actual scene remain discernable. If you were to paint a picture of your friends, what would it look like? One of the most talented, yet often overlooked, artists affiliated with the Munich-based Blaue Reiter (Blue Rider) group is Gabriele Münter. The Blaue Reiter’s founders included her dear friends, the Russian-born Alexei Jawlensky and Marianne von Werefkin. Münter’s painting, Jawlensky and Werefkin (190809), features her friends relaxing in a bucolic setting in Murnau. Yesterday we shared a view of the drawing room in Ferdinand Berthe Hodler’s Geneva apartment. It is hard to miss the stunning artwork that filled the space, including this painting by the artist. This work was presented at the Neue Galerie in 2012 as part of an exhibition on the Swiss painter. As described in the Brooklyn Rail, Hodler’s canvases breathe with a sort of palpable animism saved for only the most gifted artists and shamans....Unity underlies variation in nature; so repetition of similar forms, therefore, reinforce the all-over unity of a painting. What could be nicer than a Sunday at home? The furnishings for Ferdinand Hodler’s Geneva apartment belong to a long tradition of interior designs that Josef Hoffmann realized for fellow artists. In 1912, at the age of fifty-nine, Hodler had reached the height of his artistic recognition and the financial success that went along with it. To celebrate the occasion, we share this beautiful arrangement of multicolored birds by Franz Marc.
