GAMS art teachers, Kirstin Dorigatti and Kelsey Lemp, have created a student art installation around the building. You may notice some tiny doors around GAMS created by our artists! They are inspired by the #TinyDoorsATL movement from Atlanta. Students may wonder where the door leads or why it is there - the doors are here to inspire others and spark creativity! They are not meant to last forever, so we hope you enjoy them!

63 District Scholars Receive SUNY Orange Sojourner Truth Awards For the past thirty-one years, in honor of Sojourner Truth, SUNY Orange (Orange County Community College) has celebrated its youth by awarding them for their achievements. The college continues to recognize the accomplishments of these deserving students in grades 6-12 and encourage college attendance as an option for students from groups traditionally under-represented in the college population. For 2021, all ...nominated students will receive Certificates of Recognition from SUNY Orange. Scholars also received a letter and certificate of recognition from NYS Assemblyman and NFA Alumnus, Hon. Jonathan Jacobson. Students across Orange County are recognized in one of the following areas: Athletics Citizenship Creative Arts Diversity English Language Arts Foreign Languages Mathematics Perseverance/Effort Sciences Technology As we move through our lives during this uncertain time, now more than ever, we feel compelled to acknowledge our youth and encourage them with thoughts of a brighter future. Recognizing their achievements is our way of doing so. From the Hudson Valley Press, Sojourner Truth, for whom the program is named, lived in the mid-Hudson Valley after escaping from slavery. She is hailed as one of the most distinguished and highly regarded women of the 19th Century. Born Isabella Bomefree (later spelled Baumfree) in about 1797 in Hurley, N.Y., Isabella was sold four times before she and her daughter were given their freedom in 1828. She spoke low Dutch until she was about 10 years old and never learned to read or write. In 1843 she changed her name to Sojourner Truth to reflect her chosen mission of traveling to show people their sins and telling them what is true. She is often cited as one of the most effective and powerful speech-makers of her time. To learn more about this program, visit SUNY Orange’s Sojourner Truth website at www.sunyorange.edu/stap or call the Office of Student Services at (845) 341-4000. Our country has been enduring multiple pandemics at once: a health pandemic, an economic pandemic, and a racial pandemic. The civil unrest and the assault on the fundamental values of American Democracy that took place yesterday was disturbing. Our scholars are watching and absorbing these events and our reactions to them. We must remain committed to teach and emphasize civility, valuing facts, honoring truth, and respecting differences.

Hispanic Heritage Month Feature: Alumna Suriana Rodriguez To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, NFA P-TECH alumna Suriana Rodriguez, class of 2018, has been featured in various local publications about her journey as an NFA scholar to a young professional. While at NFA P-TECH, Suriana, she was able to have her own mentor to guide her professionally. Her mentor was Jamira Torres-Murphy, who works at IBM in Poughkeepsie. After graduating from the Newburgh Free Academy, Rodrigue...z applied for an apprenticeship position with IBM. Now, she is a full-time position and Torres-Murphy has moved from her mentor to her manager. The Newburgh Enlarged City School District offers Pathways in Technology Early College High Schools (P-TECH) at the Newburgh Free Academy, thanks to the partnership with SUNY Orange and IBM since 2011. P-TECH is a four to six year program that provides students with the opportunity to graduate with both a high school diploma and an Associate’s degree in applied sciences in either computer networking or cyber security. Rodriguez, who is from Mexico, and Torres-Murphy, who is from Puerto Rico, have both seen the positive impact that mentorships can have on the Hispanic community. Both Rodriguez and Torres-Murphy didn’t know how to speak English when they got to the United States yet they both had a strong desire to work hard with a goal in mind of success. Hispanics, latinx are one of the largest minority groups in the United States, said Torres-Murphy. Enabling Hispanics to continue to progress forward is needed for the future of society in the United States. It will allow more professionals that help society bring diversity of thought and background to different society needs, whether that’s government, technology or education. Rodriguez said she celebrates her Hispanic heritage all year long, but is glad there is a month to recognize it. I think it’s really important to celebrate it, said Rodriguez. You’re putting out success stories that haven’t been talked about throughout the year. It shows younger people how you’re not the only one out there who is striving to be something successful. As Hispanics you’re being stereotyped and told all Hispanics are this or that. It shows we can accomplish way more than what people think we should accomplish. #TBT to the NECSD Pink Out event last year! For the last several years, NECSD has recognized Pink Day to honor those who have lost their battle with cancer. This year, the Virtual Pink Day is scheduled for Friday, October 16, 2020. We ask that our NECSD community wear pink or any color that represents a tribute to fighting cancer. Photos can be shared with [email protected]. Pink Day was established by Ms. Jonelle Format-Santo, a teacher at NFA Main Campus. "Pink Day ...was established at Heritage about 10 years ago in support of a colleague that was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. During her fight we would all wear pink. When I moved to SMS I continued the tradition of Pink Day along with Heritage as a way to honor our colleague who ended up losing her battle with cancer. Since coming to NFA I have made it a district event knowing that many of our faculty, staff, and students have been affected by not only Breast Cancer, but ALL Cancers."
