Call 315-520-7100 for an appointment. Now that summer has arrived and school is out it is very important to focus on sun exposure with children of all ages. Studies for years are showing that most of your risk of skin cancer/sun damage is created by the amount of sun damage your skin has before the age of 18. Any blistering or bright red sunburns (even one) can but certain types of skin at risk for skin cancer down the road. There is a hereditary component as well. Red heads... are especially at risk. The best we can do is use a natural blocker such as titanium dioxide or zinc oxide *most brands do make just natural blockers" any other ingredient is more an additive. The brand of sunscreen Blue Lizard is a reputable brand. The SPF factor should be 30 or higher but more importantly be reapplied every couple of hours (even hourly if they are in water during peak hours) Hats and sunglasses are extremely important protection as well. If anyone in your family has had a skin cancer you should have a baseline skin check. If you have had extensive exposure as a child or even as an adult you should have a baseline check as well. Let's use what we know now to keep kids safe so that we can protect their skin and educate them about how to care for it themselves as they get older. Peak hours of the sun are 10-3 but we need to be careful during the other hours as well especially with kids playing sports during the day. They need to apply sunscreen before they go out and reapply frequently throughout the day. Tanning beds accelerate the process of damage to the skin and should be avoided. See more
