Art therapy at NHR Recovery Residences this week Art is a medium that allows people in recovery to remember their unlimited potential. In the process of creation, people come to recognize their ability to recreate themselves. Yesterday’s art class embodied the theme of gratitude. The painting of the sun and moon symbolizes learning to embrace the duality in nature and in our own selves. #HopeGrowsHere #Gratitude #RecoveryRising

Loving ourselves is so important because the way we feel about ourselves- the love and respect we have for ourselves- manifests in the relationships we have and the love and respect we accept from others. When we don’t know how to love ourselves and don’t know our worth, we are more likely to accept the unacceptable because we think we deserve less. When we embrace who we are and know that we are inherently worthy of love, we welcome others into our lives who value us. Each of us has a light within us that grows brighter with self love first. When that light is strong and bright it is a beacon that can guide others into our lives who will celebrate and feed our light, rather than extinguish it.

Otherwise known as the old adage, Actions speak louder than words. Creating change in our lives, becoming who we want to be, takes consistency, commitment and action. Starting with small daily changes in our behavior and attitudes can be built up into long lasting healthy habits and help us transform our lives.

The best way to get out of self is to be of use to others, with no ulterior motives or expectations of anything in return.

Happy Thanksgiving from New Hope Rising! This year we acknowledge that this Thanksgiving may not have been what many of us had hoped for, with many being unable to gather with their loved ones. However, we can also reflect on all we have to be grateful for, focus on what we do have and look forward to good times ahead!

Today is the first day of National Recovery Month! While we celebrate recovery every day, this month is important because it starts conversations and helps to break down stigma associated with addiction. 23.5 million American adults are living in recovery from a substance use disorder and millions more families and friends have been positively impacted by their loved ones’ recovery. Shout out to the recovery warriors for planting seeds of hope, showing those who are struggling that there is a way out. Recovery is real and hope is possible.

Today on International Overdose Awareness Day we honor and remember all those we have lost and all those we are still fighting for. You can make a difference in preventing overdose loss by getting Narcan trained, working to break down stigma in your community and being a support to someone in active addiction.

Fatal overdoses are up 43 percent in Suffolk County since the pandemic began, with 42 residents dying just in the last four weeks, according to police reports of suspected overdoses. Non-fatal overdoses increased by 19 percent this year, Suffolk police said. We are losing our neighbors, family members and friends to more than just COVID. Narcan and harm reduction education is more important than ever, as individuals with substance use disorders struggle to cope during the pandemic with isolation, changes in access to self help meetings and their supports.
