In 2021, our Young Governors are celebrating 10 years of equipping youth with the tools they need to create positive change with their peers, family, community and the world! Woohooo for the YGs! Please join us in welcoming Cohort 9 to our amazing Success Group community! Our Success Group cohorts meet regularly for support, accountability and encouragement to overcome financial challenges, proving again and again that low income does not mean low capacity. Together, families map their own plans to achieve goals and dreams like increasing income, starting a business, purchasing a car, paying off debt and enrolling in school. Since the start of pandemic we have launched 4 new cohorts including this latest cohort of five Bhutanese immigrants living right here in Elmhurst who were referred by a friend from an earlier cohort. 2020 has been a year of loss and readjustment, and often it can be hard to find bright spots in the darkness. Then something happens that reminds us miracles do... happen. We have been praying for an ultrasound machine since New Life Community Health Center opened our drop-in clinic services in 2005. And this year our prayers have been answered! Through a generous grant from the Knights of Columbus local chapter Father John J Murray Council 14666 at American Martyrs and the Knights of Columbus Supreme Council - WE HAVE A BRAND-NEW ULTRASOUND MACHINE! There are so many people to thank for their awesome efforts on behalf of #NLCHC! First, Michael Shoule and Joseph Timpa, for spearheading the fundraising that started in March 2019. James Ambrey, the former Grand Knight and his predecessor Sal Tartaglione (pictured below). Also, Ed Pearce (Deputy Grand Knight) and Fernando Barreira (Life Director). They have all been supportive of our clinic and pledged to continue that support in the future! And finally, our partners at Boro Pregnancy Counseling Center, provided us with fantastic counselors and support for the women we serve. We could not have done this without them. We want to give a special shoutout to Margaret Koch (the amazing mom of our #NLCDC director Tiffany Koch)!! Margaret knit these wonderful warm winter headbands ...to give out to the patients here. As she knit them she said a prayer for the patient who would receive her gift (take a look at pic 2 for one of the prayers she said while knitting).
