End mask mandates for students and return decision making to parents and children! Despite no statistics proving their case, government bureaucrats think they k...now what the children of New York State need better than parents, teachers, and local school boards. There are no reports of widespread problems in schools without masks, nor have there been widespread issues with children. Other states have allowed students to choose whether to wear masks in school. In fact, yesterday, New Jersey’s Governor gave school districts the local decision-making authority to unmask students due to the heat. Yet, our state hides behind the CDC despite claiming they would make regional decisions with New Jersey. It’s wrong! We must unmask our children now. As County Executive, I would issue an Executive Order to unmask our children, return parental choice and protect our school boards. See more

Today I joined my colleagues in the Majority to oppose New York State Senate Bill S4264A. This bill would raise gasoline prices by over 55 cents per gallon, and... increase the price of natural gas and home heating oil exponentially. Our message to State Lawmakers is simple: Kill the Gas Tax. This bill will devastate the middle class, seniors and the poor. Nassau County residents already pay the highest real property taxes and some of the highest income taxes in the country. If enacted these taxes will accelerate the flight from New York and will cause extreme hardship to many residents who can least afford it. Coming on the heels of the loss of jobs and business as a result of the pandemic, these increased taxes are the worst idea yet coming out of Albany.

Last night I had the opportunity to speak at a vigil held by various Asian American groups from across Nassau, mourning the victims of hate crimes and calling f...or unity. The Majority strongly condemns hate crimes of any kind and are particularly concerned about the rise in anti-Asian incidents. They will not be tolerated in Nassau County. We have scheduled a Public Safety hearing for April 8th at 11am to ensure that the NCPD is proactively acting to prevent hate crimes and protect our residents, houses of worship and businesses. It is important to send a message to every community in Nassau County, that hatred, violence and discrimination will not be tolerated, and that our law enforcement is working tirelessly to keep you safe.

It is great to see Pat and Matt reopen Park Place Restaurant & Bar. They have rebuilt the restaurant better than ever and the community is thrilled to have this terrific restaurant in this location that has been a gathering spot for generations.

I recently presented the New Hyde Park Fire Department with service bars to honor the firefighters and EMS workers for their dedicated and heroic service during... the COVID-19 pandemic. While most of our citizens were at home trying to stay safe during the pandemic, our first responders were answering calls each and every night at great personal risk to assist people in need, including many who were extremely ill. I know I speak for all of Nassau’s residents when I thank these brave men and women for service above and beyond the call of duty. See more

Today I joined members of the Majority to advocate for veterans, fraternal and similar organizations which own buildings in our communities to receive a portion... of the money that Nassau will get from the federal government for COVID relief. These organizations have not been able to hold events for over a year but still must pay tens of thousands of dollars in real property taxes. Many of the organizations are faced with the stark reality that they may have to soon close their doors if help does not arrive. The veterans and fraternal halls are part of the very fabric of our community, and we must do everything in our power to help them to remain open until they can get back to holding events.

Earlier today, I joined my colleague Hempstead Town Supervisor Don Clavin and my partners in the Nassau County government Legislator John Ferretti, Legislat...or Steve Rhoads and Legislator Bill Gaylor to demand accountability for errors made to tax bills leading to taxpayers overpaying over $13.7 million. This failure on the part of the Nassau County Department of Assessment, which is responsible for issuing these bills and is overseen by the County Executive who appointed he Assessor. This is in addition to the 5,500 errors we advised you about yesterday. The errors are entirely unfair to area property owners and must be rectified - immediately.

A Newsday study shows that 2 out of 3 Nassau residents have seen a tax increase as a result of the county executive's reassessment. The increases are only the beginning as the reassessment will be phased in over 5 years.

Today the Majority introduced two bills aimed at continuing to support our county's veterans. The legislation calls for the creation of two veterans-only parkin...g spots at all County facilities and parks, and provides discounts at County parks for veteran holders of New York State’s Liberty Pass. Our veterans have given so much to our country. Their service and sacrifice have made the United States the greatest nation in the world. These local laws are another way to say ‘Thank you’ for all that our veterans have done to preserve our freedoms and way of life.
