This is Erie working on his target behavior. A "target" is called a foundation behavior and one of the first things that animals usually learn in a training program. For this behavior, Erie is supposed to touch his nose to the bead at the end of the pole (the target). Once this behavior is learned, it will be useful for training many more behaviors.

#MeetYourNeighbors! Ocean sunfish (Mola mola) are the heaviest bony fish in the world, weighing up to 5,000 pounds! Their populations are currently declining because they are caught as bycatch and they eat plastic bags, mistaking them for jellyfish. This mola mola photo by Kathy Brady was chosen as one of the top submissions for #WCSWildView’s Reconnect with Nature assignment. #NewYorkSeascape

Just say no to balloons! For your next celebration, consider more eco-friendly alternatives like flowers, flags, or bubbles. Some marine animals, including turtles, will mistake balloons for jellyfish and try to eat them. Balloons clog up the digestive tract and give animals a false feeling of fullness. One study found that balloons are 32 times more likely than other plastic litter to result in a seabird’s death when ingested. Marine animals can also entangle themselves in the ribbons attached to the balloons, which can impede their ability to swim, cut into their skin, and cause infection. There are many fun and creative eco-friendly ways to celebrate instead - what are some examples that you have used? #50Ways #NYSeascape
