NYC Pride 14.07.2021

NYC Pride announces the official theme for 2021, The Fight Continues, as the kick-off to this year’s events and programming. In a time of tremendous adversity for the community on many fronts, The Fight Continues reflects the multitude of battles we’ve been fighting as a country and as a city. With the coronavirus pandemic still ongoing, issues of police brutality, the alarming murder rate for trans POC, economic hardship, climate disasters, violent efforts to disenfranch...ise voters, our rights as a community being questioned at the level of the Supreme Court, and more, we are in the midst of many different fights. Within this acknowledgement of what we’re fighting for and the challenges we face, we also must find the strength together to continue the fight, said André Thomas, NYC Pride Co-Chair. We’re fighting for ourselves, fighting for the BIPOC and trans members of our community, and fighting for future generations. By making this the 2021 theme for NYC Pride, we acknowledge all that we’ve accomplished and look towards what still needs to be done. NYC Pride events offer an opportunity to gather in community and highlight the diversity, resilience, and power of the LGBTQIA+ community, giving us the energy and spirit we need to continue the fight. Captured by photographer Cait Oppermann, this year’s NYC Pride 2021 campaign features a multitude of queer, trans, and BIPOC members and allies of the LGBTQIA+ community, including Gia Love, José Thomas, and Reid Jefferson. The NYC Pride 2021 roster of events will take place during Pride Month this June. Among this year’s major events are the NYC Pride March on June 27th, which will be presented in a virtual format as well as to-be-determined in-person elements, and The Rally on June 25th which will feature a diverse array of speakers and activists in a virtual format. PrideFest and Pride Island will also return on June 27th, with further details to be revealed at a later time. Other key events include Pride Presents, the Human Rights Conference, and Family Movie Night, all of which will be featured in virtual formats for 2021. Our series of Savor Pride events kicked off this year in January, with a new chef each month from January through June. Rounding out the calendar will be our second annual Black Queer Town Hall. We’re pleased to continue to be able to offer a diverse roster of programming this year, said David A. Correa, Interim Executive Director of NYC Pride. In 2020 our world dramatically changed very quickly and in a matter of weeks we were forced to pivot to virtual programming and cancel many of our events. With much more time to prepare in 2021, we’re bringing back many of the events we were forced to cancel last year, most notably Youth Pride which will engage LGBTQIA+ youth, many of whom are grappling with the absence of in-person connection. NYC Pride announces new policies to address the presence of law enforcement and NYPD at Pride events in New York. NYC Pride seeks to create safer spaces for the LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC communities at a time when violence against marginalized groups, specifically BIPOC and trans communities, has continued to escalate. The sense of safety that law enforcement is meant to provide can instead be threatening, and at times dangerous, to those in our community who are most often targeted... with excessive force and/or without reason. NYC Pride is unwilling to contribute in any way to creating an atmosphere of fear or harm for members of the community. The steps being taken by the organization challenge law enforcement to acknowledge their harm and to correct course moving forward, in hopes of making an impactful change. Effective immediately, NYC Pride will ban corrections and law enforcement exhibitors at NYC Pride events until 2025. At that time their participation will be reviewed by the Community Relations and Diversity, Accessibility, and Inclusion committees, as well as the Executive Board. In the meantime, NYC Pride will transition to providing increased community-based security and first responders, while simultaneously taking steps to reduce NYPD presence at events. NYPD is not required to lead first response and security at NYC Pride events. All aspects of first response and security that can be reallocated to trained private security, community leaders, and volunteers will be reviewed. An increased budget for security and first response will allow NYC Pride to independently build a first response emergency plan using private security and provide safety volunteers with de-escalation training for first response when necessary. NYPD will provide first response and security only when absolutely necessary as mandated by city officials. In these instances, NYC Pride will review foreseeable NYPD involvement and, in partnership with surrounding venue precincts, take steps to keep police officers at least one city block away from event perimeter areas where possible. NYC Pride is pleased to present the Human Rights Conference in its fourth consecutive year from June 21 through June 23. NYC Pride’s annual symposium of transformative changemakers in the queer community focuses on developing new ideas and approaches to activism and community. Over the course of the three days, guests will experience a virtual gathering of creators, changemakers, historians, influencers, artists, and storytellers to explore the many intersections of the LGBTQ...IA+ community’s continued fight for equity and justice. Featured presenters include Native Son Now, #Trannilicious, Ms. Boogie, and Friedman Transgender Program. This year’s Human Rights Conference introduces a series of exclusive interactive Masterclasses, where guests join experts and tastemakers in the field of activism, fashion, culture, queer history, and more to share insight and expertise through live seminars. Powered by NYC Pride’s sponsors and community partners, these classes offer viewers a chance to learn and interact with presenters representing LGBTQIA+ excellence in their fields. Following daily masterclasses, guests move to the conference’s Mainstage for panels on topics affecting the queer community- from queer BIPOC collective power, activism in nightlife, political representation, mental health, wellness, and much more. These speaker-facilitated, open conversations focus on driving dialogue and connecting communities around a particular topic rather than offering a structured presentation. Access to Mainstage digital content, including speaker-facilitated, open conversation that focuses on driving dialogue and connecting communities around a particular topic rather than offering a structured presentation, is available free of charge. Visits to the conference’s Artist Lounge afford viewers an intimate look at the works and process of queer creatives in literature, music, performance, and curation by inviting artists to discuss their work and impact firsthand. The conference culminates in a keynote address by a lauded innovator within the community. Click here to register for the Human Rights Conference! https://bit.ly/3uJ24j0

Every third Wednesday of October, we highlight, share, and educate how important it is to respect every person’s personal pronouns. . Referring to people by the pronouns they determine for themselves is basic human dignity and offers a safe space for everyone to be their authentic selves. . Adding your pronouns to your email signature and stating your pronouns upon introduction are small yet impactful actions that can create and sustain inclusive and supportive communities f...or everyone, especially for transgender and gender-nonconforming people. . Today, we encourage everyone to take these small steps towards a world of inclusivity and, don't be shy, ask! . Happy International #PronounsDay! See more
