It’s National Play Outside Day! Every first Saturday of the month, people nationwide celebrate the fun of playing outside. In this photo from 1916-1920, children are playing stickball on a New York City street that has been closed to traffic. Stickball is a street game related to baseball that was popular in the Northeastern United States; all you needed was a broom handle, a ball, and a street to play on! Do you have fond memories of playing on a New York street? And what ar...e popular outdoor play activities today? Sign up to share your story with Neighborhood Stories: https://bit.ly/3uw7eOQ. #nationalplayoutsideday #playoutside #neighborhoodstories #oralhistory #shareyourstory #streetgames #streetgame #stickball #playoutsideeveryday #openstreets #playstreets #nyc #nycdot #nycparks

It’s National Nurses Week! From May 6th to May 12th (Florence Nightingale’s birthday), we celebrate the invaluable work of our nation’s nurses. This year it is more important than ever to celebrate New York City nurses, who have battled COVID-19 in hospitals, testing centers, and vaccination sites with admirable dedication, strength, and compassion. In this photograph from 1961, nurses are attending a refresher course at the Bronx Municipal Hospital Center. They are gathered ...around an iron lung, a mechanical respirator that was invented in 1928 and used especially for patients suffering from polio. Do you have a special nurse in your life? Are you a nurse or an essential worker in New York City? Share your story with Neighborhood Stories by signing up with this link: https://bit.ly/3uw7eOQ. #nursesweek #nationalnursesweek #nationalnursesday #nationalnurseweek #nurse #nurses #nycnurse #nycnurses #essentialworkers #covid19 #nurselife #thankyounurses #neighborhoodstories #oralhistory #shareyourstory #nursesofinstagram #nurseonduty #nursesbelike #nursesunite #nursesdoitbetter #nurseinprogress

Sometimes it's remarkable how much comes out in the wash! These before and after detail shots of a survey drawing for the Brooklyn Bridges show how much brighter and less discolored paper can become after a nice calcium-adjusted water bath. #DORISConservation #conservation #nychistory #nycarchives #nyc

Something a little bit different today as we highlight another City agency, this time NYC Department of Records! They recently created a City Story that tells t...he history of the Municipal Archives through the story of #BrooklynBridge drawings! Here are a couple of our favorites from this story! See the whole story here> https://www.urbanarchive.org/stories/yeeDRY6j67Q . Assistant Architect Wilhelm Hildenbrand included some delightful details in his 1877 plans for the Brooklyn Bridge. Municipal Archives Conservators working on the drawing spotted these two almost microscopic figures enjoying themselves on the bridge. A gentleman in a top hat appears to be serenading a lady holding a parasol. . A drawing by Washington A. Roebling of a Caisson in Position . : Brooklyn Bridge Collection ca. 1870s @nycarchives #urbanarchive #nychistory #brooklyn #architecturaldrawings #nycbridges #infrastructure #municipalarchives See more
