The Alumni Spotlight: Meet Shaun Gagan! I am Shaun Gagan, a very proud Alumni of NYIT’s School Counselor Program, Cohort #1! Since I left NYTI in 2004, I have been a School Counselor for 3 different schools. TradeWinds Education Center, a division of Upstate Cerebral Palsy, West Canada Valley Elementary School and today I am a School Counselor at Belleville Henderson Central School. I have been here at BHCS for 8 years now. BHCS is a very small school (480 students K to 12). ...The Class of 2020 has 33 students and that is a larger class for us. We are located just south of Watertown, NY, roughly 30 miles from the Canadian Border. There are twice as many cows as there are people. My school has an indoor shower for cows and pigs (Seriously, we do!). I am the only School Counselor at BHCS. I have the unique ability to get to know ALL of my students extremely well throughout their entire school career. We are an agricultural area. BHCS has one of the leading FFA programs in the State. School Counselors wear several hats as part of the job. In a small school, you may even more hats! In addition to being a school counselor, I am also the school’s photographer. I work in the weight room after school. I have taught Health classes. I have learned how to braid hair. For a time I was an EMT. I tell my students that I am their Agent, like a Sports Agent. Whatever they need to be successful in or out of school that’s what my job is. I have the perfect career; in the perfect place with the perfect woman and four perfect kids (plus 4 perfect dogs!). I can trace all that back to NYIT, Dr. Carol Dahir and my fellow colleagues of Cohort #1. I have been so very blessed and lucky to have had them as a significant part of my foundation as a School Counselor. See more

The Alumni Spotlight: Meet Sam Dolitsky! For the past six years I have been Elementary Division Assistant at the Rodeph Sholom School. In this role, I found my passion for working with kids and helping them make positive decisions. It got to a point that I even expressed to my supervisor that my favorite part of my day was helping the elementary students and I even asked if this was job. She replied, Sam you are acting as a counselor. With supervisor’s encouragement, I went ...back to school part time at NYIT in the School Counselor program. Three years later, I received a Master’s in School Counseling. Last year, while continuing to work as the Elementary Division Assistant, I was offered the additional role as Wellness Educator. This role really proved that having a School Counselor degree really enhanced my ability to contribute as a member to a Wellness Team. While this was happening, I had additional experience with creating a Lunch Bunch, Digital Citizenship discussions, and SEL classroom lessons in the Elementary Division. Taking on additional responsibilities while intertwining the tools and strategies I learned in the NYIT program depicted to my school the need for a School Counselor. At the end of last year, the Rodeph Sholom School offered me the role as the Elementary / Middle School Counselor and Wellness Educator. I truly believe that I was able to achieve my goal of not only becoming a School Counselor but a School Counselor at a school that I loved working at by adding new initiatives that were taught in the NYIT program. Yes, I refer to most of the textbooks from time to time to get inspiration and validation of what I am doing. All the students in the NYIT School Counselor program, feel free to reach out! If any Alumni would like to share their story, please feel free to email Erin ([email protected]) with a blurb introducing yourself, where you are in your career and a photo of yourself! #newyorktech #nyit #nyitschoolcounseling #schoolcounseling
