Did you correctly identify this New York City Landmark? Congratulations to Aislinn K. for correctly guessing our May Mystery Landmark. The Edward Mooney House, located at 18 Bowery in Chinatown, was built between 1785 and 1789 for wealthy butcher Edward Mooney.... The brick house is a mixture of Georgian and Federal styles, and is one of the oldest remaining Early Federal style townhouses in New York City. The house was designated a City landmark in 1966 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden The Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden opened in 1915. It’s one of the oldest and most visited Japanese-inspired gardens outside Japan. It features a blend of the ancient hill-and-pond style and the more recent stroll-garden style, in which various landscape features are gradually revealed along winding paths. Conservancy president Peg Breen recently met Japanese-born artist Masao Gozu at the Court Tree Collective to view Windows to New York an exhibition of his photography and sculptures which document a now-vanished New York featuring sculptures fashioned from demolished buildings. I. M. Pei Chinese born American architect I. M. Pei (1917-2019) was one of the most renowned architects of the 20th and early 21st centuries. His notable works in New York City include the landmarked Silver Towers (New York University, pictured); the Four Seasons Hotel; and Mt. Sinai Hospital’s Guggenheim Pavilion. Pei began studying architecture in the United States in 1935 and eventually earned his B.A. from MIT and his M.A. from Harvard. After starting his own architect...ural firm in 1955, Pei went on to design such well-known structures as the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library, a wing of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the glass pyramid at the Louvre, the Museum of Islamic Art (Qatar), and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (Cleveland). Museum of Chinese in America For a quarter century the Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) has collected and documented Chinese American history and presented exhibits and programs to expand its reach beyond Chinatown. Much of MOCA’s archived collection at 70 Mulberry Street was damaged in a fire in January 2020. There is widespread demand to preserve and rebuild the 1891 former school, the first designed by famed school architect C.B.J. Snyder. The Conservancy remains acti...vely involved in this campaign. We have a Winner! #GreatPreservationBakeOff #PreservationBakes #BakeItHappen The Brooklyn Ginger Bridge created by Gillian Weeks, The Baking Branch, who had help from her daughter Greta, with Adam Richards, and Lindsey Bristol, was selected by Conservancy staff.... We will now team up with other New York preservation groups to crown the best building baker. Winners from preservation non-profits across the City and State will go head-to-head. This panel of experts will make the final decision: baker Fany Gerson; Eric Haugen, chef at the Lambs Club; and architects Liz Diller and Pamela Jerome. The ultimate prize is having fun, and sharing your love of New York’s amazing buildings. We will announce the overall winner on December 16.

Happy Hanukkah! New York City is home to the world’s largest menorah, which stands at a height of 32 feet and weights a whopping 4,000 pounds. The sculpture will be up at Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn, from Thursday, December 10 through Thursday, December 17.
