Satellite tagged sea turtle update! Read on for more info... After a few months of dormant signal, Chili, a loggerhead sea turtle that was satellite tagged and released in Summer 2019 is now live again on our tracking map! Chili stranded during the 2018 cold stun season and was one of five turtles that received a satellite tag that season. This means NYMRC has been tracking Chili’s post-release movement pattern for over a year!! Historically, this is the longest tag durati...on ever documented from a single marine animal released by NYMRC. Based on the tracking data, Chili migrated south last winter and returned to NY waters early this summer. After a few months foraging locally, Chili moved offshore into the Atlantic Ocean and is now utilizing coastal waters near Delaware. This tracking data is very important for the conversation of these critical animals and provides insight regarding post-release movement patterns, foraging areas, and overall success of a rehabilitated individual. Chili was tagged last year by NYMRC Rescue Program Director Maxine Montello and researcher Dr. Wendy McFarlane, and this satellite tag was sponsored by Manhattanville College Check out NYMRC’s tracking map and Chili’s migration by clicking this link! http://nymarinerescue.org/what-we-do/

Cold stun season is really just around the corner now! If you enjoy walking the beaches of Long Island, start looking out for cold stunned sea turtles. Once the water levels drop below about 50 degrees (currently they are at around 65!), these sea turtles can become hypothermic and wash up along the beaches. During the warm months, many sea turtles in the NY area utilize the protected areas within Long Island sound and other bays - so some of the most common beaches to find t...hese cold stunned sea turtles are north facing, East End beaches on both the North and South fork! Check beaches during or soon after high tide and along the wrack line for any sea turtles that may have washed ashore with the tides. Be sure to call our 24-Hr Hotline at 631-369-9829 with any sea turtle sightings! #nymrc #seaturtles #oceans #marinelife #coldstun #savetheseaturtles #rescueandrehab #longisland #beach #newyork #eastend
