After more than a year of COVID-19, Stories of Hope might be exactly what we need. On the latest #UnionStrong podcast, we learn about the Donate Life New York State program. We will bring you the story of a 5th generation Local #3 IBEW who is a living donor and a separate story from a retired GMP member whose life was saved through organ donation.

Our condolences go out to the family, friends and co-workers of the worker who died and we wish a quick recovery for the injured.

"In mixed and conservative areas, workers said, employer policies were often the only thing standing between them and customers who were neither masked nor vaccinated. As a result, they feel far more exposed now."

As we reopen the economy, we should ensure that workers are being paid a decent wage.

Today, Mario Cilento, President of the New York State AFL-CIO, issued the following statement in response to the misguided effort by the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA) to deprive workers of representation by the Transport Workers Union (TWU) and International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM). It’s troubling that as their members are faced with real threats to their lives and livelihoods due to the pandemic, TWU and IAM have to fend off a... foolhardy and opportunistic raid that only serves to undermine their efforts. Both unions are relentless in the fight for good wages and benefits, workplace safety and health, and a voice on the job, and their members at American Airlines see it firsthand each day. That is why I am fully confident AFMA’s raid will ultimately fail. In the meantime, I offer TWU, IAM and the workers they represent the full support of the 2.5 million members and 3,000 affiliated unions of the New York State AFL-CIO, and expect this needless threat to their representation will be quickly and resoundingly dispatched. Unquestionably, Halloween will look different this year. Since we are still in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, there will probably be a lot fewer trick-or-treaters knocking on doors. Nonetheless, even with parties, frightfests and door-to-door treat-hunting curtailed, the kids (and, sure, many of their parents) are still going to expect candy. So why not support good union jobs at the same time! From our friends at Labor 411 Sweet and Ethical Abba-Zabba (BCTGM)... Agricultural workers in New York only earn overtime when they work more than 60 hours per week while workers in other industries earn overtime after working 40 hours per week. Rectifying this inequality is a matter of human rights, dignity in the workplace and basic justice.
