NYU encourages all members of our community to be vaccinated, and we're working to support that effort. Here's an update on where things standalong with important reminders about quarantine, testing, and building access procedures for the spring semester:

NYU Silver School of Social Work's Carol Tosone previously studied how mental health professionals responded to 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina. For counselors now experiencing the same collective trauma as their patients, this is another moment like those:

Happy new year, NYU! Here's to a (much) brighter 2021.

This February will mark 60 years since Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s 1961 visit to NYU's former University Heights campus, where he delivered a speech, The Future of Integration, to a packed audience at the Hall of Fame Playhouse. "I never intend to adjust myself to the viciousness of mob-rule. I never intend to adjust myself to the evils of segregation, to economic conditions which take necessities from the many to give luxuries to the few, and to the madness of militarism and the self-defeating method of physical violence," he said. Every year we commemorate this visit with a weeklong program of events and discussions honoring King's legacy. The 2021 NYU MLK Week theme is "Chaos or Community?" http://spr.ly/6185HkOfL

Bye bye, 2020!

New York University 19.12.2020

This semester has been exhausting. I feel like my days are longer and my classes drain so much more out of me because I’m not physically there to connect with other students. Since it’s all through a screen, it feels like it’s just me and the professor. There’s no horizontal connection happening. And I think that’s been the theme. A lot of things that students are involved in, both extracurricular and academical, are much more labor intensive despite being virtual. Even thou...gh I don’t have to physically go to my classes, the hours that I spend in front of a computer screen are so lengthy that by the time I wrap up my average weekday around 7 p.m., I’m completely spent. One of the reasons I came to NYU in the first place was to connect with other students and broaden my network. Some professional development programs have done a good job of adapting to the virtual environment. But things like on-campus recruiting, which is a huge part of being a Stern student, are completely remote now. I was fortunate enough to secure a job for after graduation, but there are many students, especially sophomores and juniors, who aren’t getting the same facetime with employers that they would have otherwise. Even though I have a job lined up, it was uncertain for a long time. I didn’t know how it was going to work or how I could efficiently network with recruiters. When I was studying away at NYU Washington, DC, last spring, I saw the impact COVID had on the economy. I watched the numbers fall in real time. For a business student, or any student who’s professionally oriented, it was completely unsettling. But we looked for ways to find hope. Stern’s alumni program coordinated a speaker series with students who graduated in 2008 and 2009. They came and spoke about their experiences with a recession market and shared their wisdom about what to do when it feels like the sky is falling. The creation of an American Latino Museum is "essential to documenting the community’s contribution and to the education and future of all Americans," writes Arlene Dávila, the founding director of NYU’s Latinx Project:

A message on vaccinations from Dr. Carlo Ciotoli, Executive Lead of the COVID-19 Prevention & Response Team and Associate Vice President for Student Health: "This month, the FDA conferred Emergency Use Authorization on two vaccines using similar technologyone from Pfizer, one from Moderna, both employing messenger RNA. The data reviewed by the FDA and its independent panels found the vaccines to be safe and highly effective. Last week, a nurse at NYU Langone Health became th...e first member of the NYU communityand one of the first people in New Yorkto receive the vaccine, marking the start of the distribution program. The order in which people receive the vaccine will be determined by public health authorities, with New York State’s initial priority groups being high-risk hospital workers, nursing home residents, and nursing home staff. NYU’s objective is to be able to provide vaccinations to members of its community, and we are in the process of applying for such authorization. The distribution of a vaccine is determined by the City and State, so we do not have a date by which we will be able to provide vaccine to members of the NYU community." "The very first [COVID-19] viruses that emerged almost a year ago now are not the viruses that are circulating really almost in any country." Biology professor Neville Sanjana says rapid functional genomic studies are key to identifying more infectious variants:

New York University 19.11.2020

Given rising infection rates in New York and the emergence of a more contagious variant of the virus, NYU's COVID-19 Prevention & Response Team will be making some changes to NYU's intertwined testing, Daily Screener, and building access procedures. "Seldom has a winter break felt as well-earned as the coming one. The holiday will be different, of courseit will not be marked by the gatherings that usually take place at this time of year, and the joy that brings. Nevertheless, I hope it will make for a relaxing respite after a long semester. Spring 2021 will in many ways be like the fall. We will still emphasize safety and health; we will remain committed to our academic mission and the educational progress of students; ...we will maintain a flexible approach in supporting our students’ pursuit of their degrees and our faculty in their teaching responsibilities. We will start with quarantining for those who need it, and continue regular testing for everyone who will be accessing NYU facilities." "While we are bound by this Zoom space with our students, we can still project things into their world that can come to life on their own devices," Kapp says.

Most people who watch debates do not view them to be persuaded but to see how their candidate is going to dominate, smear or embarrass the other candidate, says NYU's Jay Van Bavel, an associate professor of psychology and neural science. Regardless of what actually transpires in a debate, evidence also indicates that many viewers filter what they see in a way that aligns with their goals and identity. When partisans tune into a debate, they often walk away with an opinion that just confirms what they believed before the debate began, Van Bavel says.

Whatever happens over the next few days, let us be guided by our community's values. An important Election Day reminder from President Hamilton: "From across our community, I hear a great deal of trepidation: fear about whether the election will involve intimidation or even violence, concerns about its legitimacy, unease about the future, worries about whether we can ever be the just society we should be. I understand your apprehension, and I share it. In the coming days, as ...votes are cast, let us draw patience, steadfastness, comfort, and perseverance from one another. As we wait for the outcomeand wait we may well have tolet us be guided by our community’s values: faith in the power of truth and facts, a commitment to free speech and dispassionate reason, belief in respect and inclusion, a longing for justice, and confidence in the democratic process." http://spr.ly/6182H6MOi See more
