National Preservation Week The American Library Association created national collections Preservation Week to bring awareness to the 1.3 billion items that need treatment to reduce the risk and rate of damage. Along with national partners, including the Library of Congress, Institute of Library and Museum Services, American Institute for Conservation, Society of American Archivists, and Heritage Preservation, preservationists work to mitigate the risk associated with our cul...tural and information heritage, especially in digital collections. The theme for this year's Preservation Week is "Preserving Community Archives." Community archives are organized by members of physical or self-identified communitiesspecifically those marginalized by traditional collecting institutionsand are focused on documenting and interpreting their own histories. Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter and New York Times Magazine journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones has been appointed as the honorary chair of Preservation Week 2021. As the creator of The New York Times's landmark 1619 Project, Hannah-Jones examines slavery's modern legacy, reframing the way we understand the history of slavery and the contributions made by Black Americans to this nation.
