It is with immense sadness that we share the news that our beloved Director, Ralph Scordino, has passed away. Ralph has been the face of Ocean Beach Youth Group for more than 20 years, greeting our campers every day with a smile and inspirational Word of the Day. Ralph came to Fire Island to run a Bud Harrelson baseball camp when his enthusiasm and expertise caught the eye of a few board members of Ocean Beach Youth Group. The following summer he joined the staff and settl...ed into the director’s house on Cottage Walk, where he was sorely missed by his neighbors this summer while camp wasn’t in session. When Ralph wasn’t leading camp, he served as the longtime mayor or the Village of Babylon. Prior to taking office, Ralph was a physical education teacher in West Islip. Ralph’s favorite role, however, included being Pop-Pop to his twin eight-year-old granddaughters, Ava and Olivia, who he enjoyed watching from the back deck of Windswept as they participated in OBYG’s bay activities. Our thoughts are with his wife Linda, son Paulie and his daughter-in-law Jamie, daughter Dina and son-in-law Spiro. We look forward to celebrating his life and contributions to the Ocean Beach community this summer, together.

This Saturday is International Coastal Clean Up Day. Please join VOBEC and the OBCF between 11-1 to clean up our beaches by meeting at the beach entrance on Cottage Walk. Wear a mask, gloves and sunscreen. Community service credit is granted upon request. This Saturday is also the Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashanah and the celebration of the Jewish New Year. Since Rosh Hashanah is the birthday of the world, what better gift could we give to our world than to begin the process of cleaning it up? Happy New Year! We hope to see our OBYG family at the beach.

We can’t wait to see what our campers and staff are selling on Saturday at Art on the Block, hosted by the Ocean Beach Community Fund.
