For sale this spring online and at our garden center: Skullcap is a low growing herbaceous native perennial in the mint family. Like other members of the mint family, skullcap is square-stemmed and has opposite leaves, though it doesn't have aromatic properties like other mint family members. Small, hooded flowers bloom starting in July, with colors ranging from blue to white, and sometimes pink. As a nervine, skullcap has a long history of medicinal use. It thrives in very m...oist, wet conditions that have access to full sun. It reaches heights of 2-3 feet and will spread 1.5-2.5 feet, spreading through rhizomes and runners. This year we are expanding our medicinal herb offerings at our garden center! Keep an eye out over the coming weeks as we profile some of our favorites. Today's favorite on this cold, icy night is lemon verbena. Known for its intense scent and flavor, Aloysia citrodora, is an herbaceous shrub with long, narrow lance-shaped leaves. It has pale white flowers that bloom from summer to fall, which is when the lemon scent is strongest. It's leaves are used both medicinally and fo...r culinary purposes, releasing the strongest scent when fresh and mellowing out when dried. It's medicinal use is often connected to digestive and mental health, as it is said to be a relaxant. Simply for it's warmth of flavor, it would be delicious paired with tulsi and mint as a nourishing winter tea. #medicinalplants #herbalism #lemonverbena #sunshineinacup #aloysiacitrodora #onenature

Have you ever noticed that there are a few deciduous tree species in the northeast that hold on to their leaves through winter? This phenomena is called marcescence. It's most common with beeches and oaks, and is often found on younger understory trees. There are a few theories as to why marcescence occurs, one being that the shriveled leaves protect young buds from deer and animal browse by camouflaging their growth. Another theory is that species like Beeches hold onto the...ir leaves until just before spring so that the tree can benefit from the organic matter as it falls and spring growth begins to occur inearnest. A third idea is that beeches and oaks have been delayed in their evolution from evergreen to fully deciduous, and still maintain some characteristics of true evergreens. #marcescence #beech #oak #fagaceaefamily #marcesco #towither See more
Reviving Sylvan Ghosts: Habitat Structures and Snag Analogs February 04, 2021 https://www.onenaturellc.com//reviving-sylvan-ghosts-habit
All hail Mulmholk! Soon to be for sale on our website. Borrowing from Swedish ideas, these hollow wood Obelisks have large interior voids to simulate the type of habitat once provided by #oldgrowthforest. Simply pack them with some oak leaves, place in your wood lot, and time will do the rest. These structures serve an important purpose. Native animal species evolved in a forested landscape that differs substantially from the current ecology of the Hudson Valley. They speciat...ed over thousands or tens of thousands of years, a duration that ecologists refer to as ecological time. This concept describes the lengths of time over which new species evolve and existing ones become extinct. In comparison to ecological time the passage of time as we experience it is dizzyingly brief, and the births and deaths by which we mark our lives are smaller patterns in vast ecological dynamics. The collision of rapid human time and gradual ecological time is evident in our landscape, where the complex biotic relationships many species rely on are absent as a result of human activity. The habitat structures that we build are an answer to one of the components of this ecological shift, the loss of large deceased trees that provide habitat for many of the smaller species native to our area. The loss of habitat trees was initiated by European colonists who deliberately and violently removed Native Peoples from the land. This genocide also resulted in the loss of the prescribed burn techniques implemented to facilitate agriculture in old growth forests. The physical remnants of colonization are still apparent in our landscape. #mulmholk See more
Not the northeast but article has relevance for all. Shows how interconnected all nature is, how little we know. For agricultural crops, people have been exp...erimenting for literally thousands of years to get things right. We’ve only been growing native plants for conservation for a couple of decades. We are often lacking the initial information you need to get started. https://blog.nature.org//coyote-scat-sabal-palm-native-p/
I’m excited to present at this upcoming virtual conference. It’s open to the public, with an emphasis on educating landscape professionals. I’ll be talking about the relationship between shifting land ethics and ecological changes in the Hudson Valley over the last several hundred years, and how our team at One Nature is trying to change the trajectory of both. Repost from @constitution_marsh January 21st & 22nd, 9:30 am-Noon to REGISTER: http://putnam.cce.cornell.edu/events #constitutionmarshauduboncenter #philipstown #newyorkgardens #nativeplants
Last year we built a raised planting bed along Broadway at our #newburghny Safe Harbors Green project. Almost immediately after we built it, people began sitting on the thin 5/4 lumber edges. Rather than add things to discourage seating, we added a new bench. As the core of Newburgh gentrifies, many people are being displaced and must find new ways to gather. Unfortunately, most available city bench designs are meant to keep people from using them too much. So we designed ou...r own. It’s big, wide, and comfortable. We used cedar, a soft and intimate wood, and punctuated it with two monolithic bluestone masses to dampen vibration, reflect material choices in the park, and create openness (literal and figurative) between sections. This spring, newly planted wildflowers and grasses will add a calming backdrop. For too long, the prevailing viewpoint has been that comfortable benches attract the wrong kind of people and crime. [I myself drank that Kool Aid as a young employee at NYC Parks during the Bloomberg administration’s push to privatize public space]. But now I know that’s BS. Actually, most of the time they are places of gathering, enjoyment of public space, and community. In some situations comfortable benches in public places REVEAL problems that already exist. Most people don’t want to see these problems. They want to hide behind their car windows, the walls of their houses, unconscious mantras, and other types of exclusionary social architecture. Look closely at the bench designs in urban areas and you’ll find all sorts of oppressive architectural decisions (narrow, short, punctuated with uncomfortable forms). Discouraging use of open space only makes things worse. Just like smart phone videography reveals social injustice, so do usable public spaces by creating more eyes on the street. #urbandesign #socialjustice #publicspace #outdoorfurniture #homelessness #community #eyesonthestreet #safeharborsgreen See more

Repost from @socks_studio Patterns from the World Underneath: The Ecological Relations of Roots by John Ernest Weaver (1919) The ecological relations of roots (1919) is a book by John Ernest Weaver (1884 1966), an American biologist and prairie ecologist. During his life, Weaver published a series of books on the relationship between plant species, their climate and the specific soils they inhabit. This book focuses on the roots of native plants in desert climates, featur...ing more than 140 species chosen after the examination of more than 1000 individual plants across different territories. #plants #botanicalillustration #illustration #roots
