Today, the Syracuse Common Council unanimously adopted legislation to implement independent, bipartisan redistricting. Our city will be the first municipality i...n the NorthEast to adopt this initiative. There is an inherent conflict when legislators draw their own district maps. Nationally, via gerrymandering, legislators are rigging the political process by drawing unfair maps. Syracuse is now a national leader, ensuring the voters choose their representatives, rather than representatives choosing their voters. Thanks to all the folks who worked to make this a reality! Much respect to Dustin M. Czarny, Council President Helen Hudson for leading the charge, as well as President Pro Temp Khalid Bey. Shout outs to Perrine Wasser, Fair Maps CNY, & John Deer for their advocacy, and County Legislator Christopher Ryan for pushing this at the County Level. Perhaps next year Chris? Honored to have been a part of getting this over the finish line! Cuse leading the way!
The Onondaga County Democratic Committee statement on the unrest and violence at the U.S. Capitol. We at the Onondaga County Democratic Committee are deeply saddened by the violence that ensued in Washington on a day that was supposed to be a hallmark for our Democracy the certification of the Electoral College vote. We condemn this violence in the strongest possible terms. These scenes of chaos at our U.S. Capitol are not who we are as Americans. This is not dissent or ...the work of peaceful protestors. This is an assault on our democracy and an attack on the rule of law. In this sad moment for our country, we call on all Americans to come together to move our country forward. Our country’s great experiment in democracy remains fragile and we cannot move our country forward by retreating into our separate quadrants. If we are going to meet the immense challenges of our time, we are going to have to do it together. Let us come together and pray for America and for an end to this violence.
The COVID-19 Emergency Eviction and Foreclosure Prevention Act of 2020 (A.11181) gives New Yorkers the peace of mind that they will not lose their homes during ...the pandemic by temporarily staying evictions and foreclosures until May 1, 2021, and halting all eviction court proceedings. It also protects small landlords by ensuring their properties won’t be foreclosed on. The devastating job and income loss our families have experienced over these past months have made it absolutely critical for us to act immediately. We’re also facing the coldest months of the year and no one should be forced out onto the street because of circumstances outside of their control. This legislation will go a long way in providing tenants some much-needed relief for the time being, but this is by no means a final solution. The Assembly and Senate passed this legislation last night and the Governor signed it into law without delay. This video is from my speech during yesterday's session in Albany: https://nyassembly.gov/mem/Pamela-J-Hunter/video/
